My story

[p]Hi I’m Thom, and I’m planning to do a sponsored bike ride, this will be an estimated 20 miles long and it is to raise money for Tourettes Action. I will be riding alongside some of my best friends who will also help sponsor our ride. I am hoping to raise £250 this will enable members of the Tourettes Action team to go into a school and educate the parents and teachers about Tourettes Syndrome. The reason I have decided to do this ride is because I suffer from Tourettes, and have done since I was very young. I think that Tourettes Syndrome is probably one of the least understood syndromes out there, as many are quick to judge when it comes to hearing its name. Many relate Tourettes to swearing, being aggressive and very rude, when in reality that is only a very small part of Tourettes. The main ‘ticks’ I suffer from are called motor ticks and mental ticks and yes, I do suffer from coprolalia (swearing) but only when I find myself triggered or stressed and this is what most people think of when I tell them I have Tourettes. In addition, mental ticks and eye blinking are my most common ticks, which can happen over and over again throughout the day. I think that it is so important for people to realise that although from the outside someone doesn’t look like they have Tourettes on the inside it is a whole different story of distractions, triggers and uncontrollable things that people like me have to go through every day of their life. So please donate as much or as little as you can afford to help Tourettes Action and to raise awareness of people like me and to accept others with Tourettes. Thank you.[/p]
