My story

[p]HeartUK is the UK's cholesterol charity, raising support and awareness for families with Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (FH). FH is an inherited disease that prevents the body being able to clear cholesterol from the blood, leading to build-up in arteries. Left untreated, many people with FH have a very high risk of heart attack.[/p][p]My husband has FH. He had a heart attack aged 39. His own father died of a heart attack in his early 40s. Both my children have inherited the condition. We are lucky, because we know our kids have FH. HeartUK estimates that 1 in 250 have FH, but that fewer than 1 in 8 of those affected know they are affected. By running the London Marathon in 2019, I aim to raise as much money as possible to support HeartUK's essential work in raising awareness of FH, of lobbying for national tests and registers of those affected. Please help me to do this.[/p][p]My beloved Dad died in September 2018, also of a heart attack. I will be running in his memory and for my childrens' future. [/p][p]On a lighter note, I will also have to tackle the huge training involved in the depths of the Scottish winter. Your support will help me to get out for those long runs in freezing conditions![/p][p]Thank you! Love, Helen[/p][p][br][/p][p]Update February 3rd 2019[/p][p]I’ve just finished the first 4 weeks of my 16 week training plan. I’m up to 10 miles on long runs, and thankfully injury-free 🤞despite the weather’s best efforts. I really wasn’t joking when I predicted the freezing conditions would tug at my motivation, although it makes the views prettier (see photo!). Knowing I have so much support already is really helping, so thank you all again for your donations. On to the next 4 weeks.....[/p][p]Update April 1st 2019[/p][p]I'm starting to get very excited now with less than 4 weeks to go. The last few weeks have been tough in the training, trying to fit in 14, 16, 18 mile runs along with the usual work, family, conferences, meetings, but the rush of achievement when I've run further than ever before makes it all worth it. I'm having to get up very early on Sundays to fit everything in, so have taken to getting out before sunrise and having the incentive of watching the sun come up (see latest photo). I'm also really thrilled to have exceeded my fundraising target, thanks so much to everyone who has donated so far, it really makes a difference as those miles get longer. Feel free to top-up the pot if you've yet to make a donation, I may be biased, but I think it's a very worthy cause.[/p][p]I'm looking forward to the tapering, and the carb-loading! I will update how I got on once it's all over.....[/p][p][br][/p][p]Update 30th April 2019[/p][p]I did it! It was tough, but a hugely enjoyable experience. I had hoped to get around in under 5 hours, so am delighted with my time of 4:56:34. Miles 22 and 23 were hard, but the final 3 were great fun. Obligatory medal pic below![/p][p]I can’t believe how much money we raised, thank you all so much for your kind donations, they will make a huge difference to Heart UK’s work.[/p][p]All the best,[/p][p]Helen[/p][p][br][/p]

Hi Helen, what a great cause. I am very pleased to donate, especially to a smaller charity that perhaps doesn't get the big bucks of the bigger ones. Good on you for doing this, Gareth
