My story

[p]NEW DATES SET FOR JULY 2021[/p][p]Tim Mitchell, ENT Consultant Surgeon based in Southampton.[/p][p] [/p][p]In summer 2019, I approached my colleague on RCS England Council, Sue Hill (Vascular Surgery Consultant in Cardiff), with an idea. An idea that I expected to be immediately knocked back, but to my surprise, she agreed. [/p][p] [/p][p]The idea was to cycle 1000 miles from Land's End to John O'Groats. Despite neither of us being seasoned cyclists (our most recent notable ventures being back when we were students) or having cycled anywhere near this distance before. [/p][p][br][/p][p]Of course, our plans for April 2020 had to be postponed because of Covid. Undeterred and driven on by the very generous donations that we have already received, we are now intending to set off on 10 July 2021.[/p][p][br][/p][p]So why? It’s a question we are increasingly asking ourselves as we approach the start date. As experienced and dedicated surgeons, we have first-hand experience of the impact that surgical research can have upon lives. Most of us know a family member or friend whose life has been saved or dramatically improved due to modern surgery, and this is the cause we both dedicate our lives to, every day we go to work. [/p][p][br][/p][p]In addition to RCS England’s surgical research fund, we are raising money for Myeloma UK. We have recently seen the impact of this condition on our friend and fellow Council member, Scarlett McNally. Scarlett is a keen cyclist and has been a great proponent of the benefits of regular exercise, so it is appropriate that we should show our support with this cycling challenge. Myeloma UK helps to support people with the condition and to fund research to identify better treatments.[/p][p] [/p][p]We are training hard (through the British winter, which has not always been easy) and learning fast, with multiple scrapes and bruises between us. We believe it’s worth it, but your support, however large or small, would mean a great deal, and will keep us going over our 16 day, 1000 mile, all-terrain and whatever-the-weather trip. [/p][p] [/p][p]Thank you in advance.[/p][p] [/p][p]Tim and Sue[/p][p] [/p]
