My story

[p]First Touch was set up in 1998 to support the babies, families and staff on the Neonatal Unit at St George's Hospital.[/p][p]Each year the neonatal unit cares for 600 babies each year. Many of the babies we care for have been born prematurely, with some mothers having only just reached 24 weeks of pregnancy (40 weeks is generally considered normal). Some babies require life saving surgery. We want these babies to grow up to be healthy, happy children with bright futures.[/p][p]First Touch is the only charity dedicated to the nnu at St George's and the money raised by our supporters goes directly to fund equipment and projects to improve outcomes for the babies and their families.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Charlie's Story:[/p][p]Charlotte-Clare Wood aka 'Charlie' made her unexpected arrival into the world in February 2018. [/p][p]Her journey was not an easy one. In early February, Clare (Charlie's Mummy) waters broke when Charlie was only 29 weeks. Mike, (M1's Captain & Father) subsequently rushed to the hospital with Clare.[/p][p]Due to the waters breaking and no labour pending, the doctors diagnosed the problem as something mechanical and after a battery of tests, it turned out that Charlie in gestation, had developed a duodenal atresia or more commonly called a "double bubble" where the intestines don't connect correctly.[/p][p]The results of the tests indicated that Charlie would need life saving surgery within 24 hours after being born to correct the abnormality and we were advised that the surgery was going to take place at St-Georges hospital after meeting the surgery team.[/p][p]The next day, Charlie decided enough was enough and was born at 30 weeks +6 days at a weight of 1400g (3lb 1oz) at Kingston Hospital and was subsequently blue lighted to St-George's for surgery and observation.[/p][p]Following this, Charlie received her surgery and then was on the mend. The First Touch charity were there for Clare and I in our time of need. They found accommodation at the hospital, provided us with food, support, and everything we could have needed to care for ourselves and Charlie over the course of 3 weeks.[/p][p]Charlie ended up being at the NNU St-Georges for 21 days where she received the best possible care from incredible doctors, nurses, consultants, midwives, support staff. We cannot thank them enough. Clare and Mike were cared for by the exceptional First Touch charity and made our stay just that much easier.[/p][p]Following that, Charlie was brought to Kingston hospital and stayed for another 21 days and was eventually discharged for good after spending a total of 42 days in hospital.[/p][p]Now she's a happy healthy little baby who loves coming out in her OKH colours on Saturdays and supporting Daddy and the club. We couldn't be more proud of our little fierce fighter.[/p][p]We hope that you can spare some time for the fun event we wish to put on where your donations will greatly help other parents going through a stressful and overwhelming time. It is fantastic how charities like First Touch help provide support for parents in need.[/p][p][br][/p][p][UPDATE] Due to unforeseen circumstances the event date has been moved to a later date this year.[/p]
