My story

[p]I ran this in 1990 at the age of 27, and as a personal challenge, have decided to have another go, 28 years later, but this time in my wheelchair. I was diagnosed with HSP in 1999 and walking has gradually got more and more difficult ever since. In 1990 I ran this half marathon in 2 hours and 2 minutes, so although it's going to be tough, I'd like to get within an hour of that time so I've set my self a target of 3 hours and 2 minutes and I'm training hard to make it achieveable. I now even have my own amazing, personal trainer. Five times Paralympian, Ann Wild (one of this years flying scholarship recipients) is training me online and also giving me nutritional advice (www.annwild.com). I could make it easy and borrow a racing wheelchair, David Weir style, but I want to make it a real challenge so I've decided to use my everyday chair. [/p][p] At a point in my life when I really needed a lift, in 2005, I was awarded a flying scholarship from Flying Scholarships for Disabled People (FSDP). In addition to changing my life completely, through FSDP I've been fortunate enough to meet many amazing people who've taught me that a wheelchair can be a great friend :) This is to say thanks to both the charity and all the individuals concerned, and to hopefully convince one or two others in similar circumstances that there's nothing negative about a wheelchair.[/p]
