My story

[p]Approximately 1 in 100 babies are born with Congenital Heart Disease (CHD). Every family's CHD journey is a different one - for some the condition is diagnosed at birth or even in pregnancy whereas for others it's only picked up weeks or months later in an emergency scenario. For some children CHD is life limiting, for others it is a chapter in their childhood and they go on to be thriving adults. It may require surgery once, twice or repeatedly over the years - but it might not. Some children need heart transplants, others are on medication for life. Sadly, some lose their battles. Every child's journey is recognised and valued by both Evelina London Children's Hospital Cardiology team and ECHO.[/p][p]This I Am #1in100 #BornWithCHD campaign is about Evelina Cardiology families saying thank you and showing their support to two amazing charities that are indispensable to them on their CHD journeys. It's about raising the profile of the brilliant work they both do, increasing public awareness of CHD and celebrating our heart warriors themselves - their bravery, resilience and their sense of self. It's about being proud of who they are and their sense of identity and belonging within the heart community.[/p][p]The Evelina Cardiology team is incredible. They treat over 6000 children every year, including those with common and rare congenital heart diseases as well as other children who acquire heart disease during childhood, through infections of the heart, Kawasaki Disease or most recently, PIMS-TS. The money raised by The Cardiology Kids Fundraising Campaign goes straight into the 'Children's Heart Fund' at Evelina London Children's Hospital and it is ring-fenced specifically for Cardiology priority needs under the direction of Dr Bell (Head of Service for Paediatric Cardiology). Basically, it hits the NHS front line where it makes a difference and helps fund specialist medical equipment for children with poorly hearts. [/p][p]Evelina Children’s Heart Organisation (ECHO) receives no government or NHS funding and relies solely on public generosity to ensure that it continues to support and empower children, young people and families affected by heart disease. ECHO has been massively affected by Covid19 because so many planned fundraising events were cancelled and will be for a long time to come. This is a time like no other when families who benefit so much from ECHO’s services and support have flipped things to come together and support ECHO![/p][p]ECHO provides support to [/p][p]*Children and young people with heart conditions from birth to adulthood[/p][p]*Parents & Carers whose children are diagnosed with a heart condition either prenatally or during childhood, throughout their child’s life and at times when they need us most[/p][p]*Siblings of those affected with CHD from birth to adulthood living with a heart child[/p][p]*Wider family who support ECHO members[/p][p]*Professionals supporting families as part of Evelina London Children’s Hospital networks.[/p][p]It aims to support members from across the UK and do so both within Evelina London Children’s Hospital, local general hospitals and throughout the community. For more details, check out https://echo-uk.org/[/p][p]Huge thanks to Byron Gold for being such a special part of this project and allowing us to use his beautiful song, I Am Home. Sung by Byron Gold & the Stratford East Singers, it provides the most wonderful musical frame for our video compilation.[/p][p]All money raised will be divided equally between the 2 charities.[/p]
