My story

[p]Hi all, thank you very much for visiting my page. [/p] [p]In April 2016 I, along with a number of other people of questionable sanity, will be embarking on 31st edition of the Marathon des Sables. Dubbed 'the toughest foot race on earth' this event is a six day 251km (156mile) race through the Sahara desert. Daytime temperatures reaching 50ºC and me carrying everything I need for those six days on my back will undoubtedly make this one of the most challenging things I will ever do in my life.[/p] [p]I am fundraising on behalf of the charity MapAction. They are a non-governmental organisation that specialise in providing mapping for humanitarian emergencies. From the Asian tsunami in 2004 right up to the 2015 Nepalese earthquake, MapAction’s volunteer teams deploy all over the world to provide geospatial support to those in need. Before aid agencies can help in disaster situations, their first requirement is information. Which areas have yet to be reached? Where are the relief resources? Where are the people in greatest need? MapAction delivers this vital information in mapped form, from data gathered at the disaster scene. Creating a 'shared operational picture' is crucial for making informed decisions and delivering aid to the right place, quickly. [/p] [p]I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations you could provide. I really think the work that MapAction do is amazing and a vital but often unknown part of humanitarian aid. If the lunacy of me running across a desert can aid their cause in any way, then I will consider all the suffering and exertion more than worth it.[/p] [p]Thanks again[/p] [p]Iain  [/p]
