My story

[p]Last Christmas my loving family entered and paid for me to race across the Bosphorus, this was accompanied by the observation that I was getting fat. Thank you all very much![/p][p]The Hellespont Race is an open water swim of 5.7km in very tidal waters from Europe to Asia across one of the world busiest shipping lanes. [/p][p]Known as the world's oldest swim, due to the fact that in ancient Greek times Leander swam across the strait to meet his lover Hero, he drowned trying to get back. It was officially swum for the first time in 1810 by Lord Byron and ever since has been regarded as the epitome of open water swimming. [/p][p]I have never attempted an open water swim.[/p][p]I now have a pink swimming cap, as shown, and a pair of impossibly tight competition swimming jammers, not shown. I am a regular at Drumsheugh Baths, I can do the distance and I can do the time but not yet both requirements together.[/p][p]As I can't come up with any plausible way of getting out of this event I have decided to do some good and raise money for charity.[/p][p]My charities of choice are[/p][p]Firefly International - a small charity based in the UK creating safe spaces and opportunities for children affected by war in Bosnia, Turkey, Syria and Gaza. www.fireflyinternational.org[/p][p]Medecins Sans Frontieres or in English Doctors without borders who help all people in the worlds worst conflict zones. www.msf.org.uk [/p]

An intercontinental swim is pretty impressive. Make sure you are well protected with antibiotics before swimming in that water!
