My story

[p]The Ring of Fire 135 miles (4000m) around Ynys Mon in 37 hours.[/p][p]Not wanting a party to celebrate my 50th year I undertook an endurance challenge instead. Nia discovered the plan and became surprisingly unimpressed. In an effort to make amends I promised to raise money and awareness for two charities that support children, patients and families suffering from Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Unlike other disabling and unpleasant conditions Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis are seldom discussed and the public, the press, our commissioners and the government remain largely ignorant about these horrible diseases. This neglect is reflected in poorly resourced services - please help.[/p][p]My Ring of Fire – http://www.ringofire.co.uk/[/p][p]73 left Holyhead at lunchtime on Friday 31 August. Two days later only 37 finished. We had circled Ynys Mon via the coastal path. We ran 135 miles over 3 stages – covering approximately 37 / 65 / 33 miles under strict time limits. We rested together in the Amlwch Leisure Centre and the Aberffraw Village Hall in sleeping bags to be woken both mornings at 5 am by the Johnny Cash song. The multi-surface path has sharp rock, soft sand, shingle, road, dirt, marsh and fields. There is over 4000m of ascent / descent (4 times Snowdon) and navigation is required between the check points and “honesty books”. Averaging 4 mph my pack always weighed 3 to 5 kg. I slept for less than 3 hours in 2 nights and finished in a just over 37 hours from the allowed 40 hours. This was my only multiday ultramarathon and I first ran over 26 miles in February. This event is tough, emotional but amazing, the scenery is beautiful and I have seldom felt as happy or fulfilled. This was my Everest, I shall not try this again.[/p][p]Acknowledgements[/p][p]I know that I can be hard to live with and I am grateful to my loving wife and colleagues for putting up with me and allowing me this indulgence. I am also especially grateful to Aled Huws / Lisa Dafydd for their support and sacrifice while we trained. I am indebted to Mike Cosgrove, Toni Williams, Emma Trow and Ellie Davison for doing all the work in August while my family enjoyed the generous hospitality of my sister Clare and husband Steve Drobny in Malibu. In California I benefited from conditioning, coaching and Yoga instruction from Ted McDonald http://www.teddymcdonald.com/ . Thanks to Nia, Mum & Dad, Joe, Guto, Manon, Iolo, other competitors and the organizers of this unique event for keeping my spirits up during "dark times” and for allowing me this opportunity in the first place. Finally, I’ll never forget the bar maid in the Liverpool Arms (Menai Bridge) for allowing me to use the toilet when in very urgent need! [/p][p]Kit[/p][p]My bag & hydration system is a “Camelbak”, the comfortable trail shoes were “Hoka One One”, an essential watch & GPS is “Garmin”, electrolytes by “Beach Body Performance”, trekking poles are made by "Mountain King", surgical spirit from “Boots”, flapjacks from Mum and I needed “Skins” calf & thigh compression throughout.[/p][p]Diolch, that’s it.
