My story

[p]As the first Coronavirus lockdown came in to effect, a close family friend passed away. Ellen had been my mum’s best friend for well over 30 years, since they were at Durham University together. Ellen played a huge role in our family. To me, she was always Aunty Ellen. From Christmases and New Year’s Eves to birthdays, big walks and great advice, every day we spent with her was filled with laughter and warmth.[/p][p]Aunty Ellen was diagnosed with a type of Sarcoma in early March 2017. Sarcomas are rare types of cancer of the bone and soft tissue. There are many different types of soft tissue and bone sarcoma and they are amongst the hardest cancers to diagnose and treat. Sarcoma UK is the only cancer charity in the UK focused on all types of sarcoma. [/p][p]To raise awareness and funds for Sarcoma UK, I will be running the 2021 London Marathon in memory of Ellen. The London Marathon will take place on Sunday 3rd October. I endeavour to take on this huge challenge with the bravery and courage that Ellen approached her illness and treatments with. I started running just after Ellen passed away. I began with the Couch to 5K and have since run up to 15km - a long way to go to the 26.2 miles of a marathon! However, I am committed to getting to that finish line on 3rd October having raised lots of money for Sarcoma UK![/p][p]You can support me in this by donating to my fundraiser! Any gift large or small is appreciated and will make a difference.[/p][p]So what can Sarcoma UK do with your donations?[/p][p]· £5 will cover the cost of the text service for one day allowing more people to access our specialist team.[/p][p]· £10 could be used to buy microscope slides, which are used to look at cells and samples of tissue in minute detail.[/p][p]· £20 will go towards ensuring all of the Sarcoma specialist centres in the UK have posters to ensure promotion of the Sarcoma UK Support Line service.[/p][p]· £30 could fund one hour of use of a high-powered laboratory microscope. Scientists use microscopes to study cells and tissue in great detail.[/p][p]· £50 will cover the cost of the virtual call centre used to run the Sarcoma UK support line for 1 week. [/p][p]· £1,000 is enough to pay for an incubator for growing cells in the laboratory. To successfully grow and study cells in a laboratory, an incubator is important to maintain a constant environment.[/p][p]Thank you, [/p][p]Imo x[/p]
