Team story

[p]In February 2017 we received the news that after ten years of complete remission, my mum’s breast cancer had returned. It had returned and established itself in her lungs and spread into her brain. From the moment we found out the news, we started to fight and we continue to fight to this day. As yet, there is no cure for her illness, however after rounds of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, MRI scans and CT scans the treatments are providing positive results, keeping the cancer under control. [/p][p]The staff in the Oncology unit at Furness General Hospital, have been truly amazing right from diagnosis. They all do a fantastic job and take personal responsibility for making sure that each of their patients is special and cared for. We spend a lot of time there and the support we receive is so important to us. They listen, they get to know people personally, they offer positive advice and they make their patients feel comfortable. Nothing seems to much trouble for them and they always lift our spirits.[/p][p]We also spend time at the Rosemere Cancer Centre, which is part of the Royal Preston Hospital. Here my mum has received radiotherapy and stereo tactic radiotherapy, a relatively new technique for treating brain tumours. So far, this treatment has been successful in reducing the size of the tumours targeted. The expertise and facilities here are amongst the best in Britain, and we always find the staff so supportive and friendly. [/p][p]Cancer affects millions of people globally and we feel very lucky to have these two organisations supporting us as we continue to fight the condition. [/p][p]The Challenge[/p][p]A team of 7, including myself and my brother, have decided to take on a challenge. We are using this as a way of raising money for the chosen charities that fund both of these amazing organisations – the Bay Hospitals Charity (all money raised here will go to the Furness hospital oncology unit) and The Rosemere Cancer Foundation.[/p][p]We are climbing the three highest peaks in the UK (Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis) .… and we are cycling between them (gulp). The challenge will require us to walk around 44 km and cycle almost 700km. We plan to start at Snowdon in Wales on Friday 12th July and we have 4/5 days to complete the challenge. The team is made up of bike enthusiasts, adventure seekers, fitness fanatics and all round good people up for a challenge and a laugh along the way. We have all been busy training and getting ourselves in the best state we can to give this challenge our best. [/p][p]In hope to raise more money for these amazing charities, my Dad is walking part of the Camino de Santiago. The walk will take 7 days covering around 100km. He will be wearing his Rosemere and Bay hospitals charity t-shirt along the way, promoting the events and trying to raise as much money as he can. [/p][p]We have all agreed to raise money for both of these local charities as they are close to our hearts. Both charities are equally important to us so we plan to give the same amount to each. [/p][p][br][/p][p]Although challenges for charity seem tough, I see real challenge on a regular basis, people going through treatment and fighting cancer. These people are the real heroes, these people are the true inspiration and why we want to raise as much money as we can to help in any way we can. [/p][p][br][/p][p]Thank you[/p][p]Josh Williams[/p][p][br][/p][p]The Impact Team[/p][p]Josh Williams, Sam Williams, Andy Dickson, Izzy Cambray, Simon Brown, David Milligan, Emma Milligan,[/p][p]David Williams[/p][p][br][/p][p]Due to the overwhelming generosity from everyone who has donated, we have been able to bump our target up. Thank you all very much![/p]
