My story

[p] My name is Issy Torrie, I am 18 and a year 13 student sitting my A-Level exams this year. In July, I am going to be riding the challenging Prudential Ride London Surrey 100 sportive to raise money for the charity Mind. Mental health is just as important as physical health, but in recent years mental health services have been eroded by government cuts and it's the important work of charities like Mind that fill the gap. Whilst I don’t suffer from any mental health problems of my own, they have been a large part of my life over recent years. My best friend is the first inspiration for me taking on this challenge. She suffered with an eating disorder throughout secondary school and sixth form, which at points has been so severe that she has been admitted to hospital and mental health clinics. Despite her own ongoing struggles, she has been my rock and her friendship is incredibly important to me. A large part of taking on this challenge, therefore, is for her. My second inspiration for taking on this challenge is my sister. Recently, she was diagnosed with traits of borderline personality disorder and has been struggling immensely with her mental health. Her perseverance with her art degree and involvement in voluntary work is a continual motivation to me and taking on this challenge is largely in recognition of her determination. Finally, my third and most heartbreaking inspiration is a school peer who took their own life last November. It has been a challenge to understand how somebody who appeared so happy and full of life could be suffering so much inside. You can’t see depression, or eating disorders; mental health disorders hide behind smiles and this can make us feel incredibly helpless. It’s often difficult to see how we can help those we love that are struggling with mental health. By raising money for such an important mental health charity who knows how to help, I hope that I can do my bit for the mental health of our society. Zeynep’s life, my sister and best friend’s struggle and every other battle with mental health deserves recognition and support like any physical illness. Please help me do something positive and sponsor me to ride a 100 miles for such an important cause. #milesforsmiles[/p][p] [/p]
