My story

[p]Between 2007 and 2010 my father, Jeremy James, found himself fighting cancer; unfortunately, he lost his battle in May 2010. To mark the decade anniversary since we lost him, I wanted to do something memorable and get as close as I could to the challenge he faced.[/p][p]Therefore, I have decided to take on the following four challenges across an 18-month period; Richmond Marathon, Marbella 70.3 Ironman, Wales Ironman and the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge 2020. I believe that these events will put me through both the mental and physical challenges Jeremy went through, or as close as I can imagine and create without battling the dreadful disease myself.[/p][p]The reason for supporting Cancer Research UK is obvious. It is a charity which is very close to my family’s heart and I would really love to do something to pay them back for all their support across the years when we needed them most and for giving us hope when the medical staff tried the latest treatments available at the time. Around one in every two of us will be diagnosed with a form of cancer in their lifetime but there is a cure out there and I hope with your generosity that we will be able to support this fight to fund future research.[/p][p]The other two charities I will be supporting are Shipston Home Nursing and Tusk. SHN are a local charity founded in 1997 with the purpose of caring for patients with illnesses which do not respond to curative treatment and who wish to be nursed at home. Their nursing services are managed through a team of Registered General Nurses specialising in palliative care supported by Health Care Assistants. They care for the patient as well as their family, keeping them in their own homes throughout the period of their illness. They specifically supported my mother whilst dad was at home, by offering to provide overnight nursing support so that she could get some rest during the final few days.[/p][p]Tusk is charity which is closely supported by my sister who, along with others, currently hold the world record for the highest (altitude) cricket match ever played - this was on top of Mount Kilimanjaro. For almost thirty years, Tusk has supported forward-thinking and successful conservation intervention in Africa. From the plains of the Serengeti to the rainforests of the Congo Basin, they're working towards a future in which people and wildlife can both thrive across the African continent. They work with successful local organisations, supporting and nurturing their conservation programmes to accelerate growth from an innovative idea to a scalable solution.[/p][p]Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge[/p][p]The premier event in ocean rowing – a challenge that will take me more than 3,000 miles west from San Sebastian in La Gomera in the Canary Islands off Spain to Nelson’s Dockyard, English Harbour, in Antigua & Barbuda. The annual race begins in early December, with up to 40 teams participating from around the world. The race structure brings together an environment where teams from across the globe gather in the race village of San Sebastian in La Gomera, Canary Islands. I believe the atmosphere is electric as people help each other prepare for the challenge of the mighty Atlantic Ocean all with the same objective – to take on the unique experience of crossing an ocean in a rowing boat.[/p][p]Richmond Marathon[/p][p]Running through London’s greatest borough including Kew Gardens, Richmond Bridge and Hampton Court Palace. With three famous bridges, two Royal Palaces and one famous river this race has been described as “the Worlds most scenic Marathon!” The RUNFEST Marathon starts inside the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. The race will tour Richmond, the greenest borough, the highlight being the majestic Hampton Court Palace.[/p][p]Marbella Ironman 70.3[/p][p]Athletes will start by swimming 1.9km/1.2miles in the Mediterranean waters. After the transition, located in the legendary Avenida de las Naciones Unidas, they will cycle the 90 km/56miles of the bike course through memorable settings like Puerto de Ojén, ascending along the “caracolillos” road. They will cross-different towns like Onda, Coín, and Cártama. Athletes will then ride back to Marbella to enjoy the last 21km/13.1mile run by the seafront promenade, flanked by cheering spectators as they strive for the finish line - right on the sand of Puerto Banús. (It’s called the Ironman 70.3 because that refers to the total distance).[/p][p]Wales Ironman[/p][p]IRONMAN Wales begins on Tenby's North Beach, which provides one of the most spectacular swim (4 km) locations on the race circuit. Despite challenging bike (180 km) and run (42 km) courses, athletes are treated to consistent and motivating inspiration from some of the most vocal and enthusiastic spectators in endurance sports.[/p]
