Team story

[p]On 9th June 2018 I will complete The Duchenne Dash, a 290km (180miles) cycle from London to Paris in support of The Jacobis Wish Trust, alongside Mike Cox. [/p][p][br][/p][p]In September 2017 my nephew Jacobi, who is 4, was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD).[/p][p][br][/p][p]DMD is a severe muscle wasting disease caused by the lack of a protein called dystrophin. Over time the muscles in a boy affected by DMD will gradually degenerate, resulting in the loss of ability to walk and the need for a wheelchair typically around age 8 to 13, when he should only be thinking about finishing primary school. This cruel disease also reduces life expectancy and at present, there is no cure. [/p][p][br][/p][p]Jacobis parents Faye and Nathan formed The Jacobi’s Wish Trust to join with Duchenne UK’s mission to ‘End Duchenne in Ten’, and the level of support has been amazing. They’ve been genuinely blown away by the kindness and generosity of people, from North East Scotland and far beyond. [/p][p]… [/p][p]Mike and I will start the Dash in London on 8th June, heading South to Newhaven (96km / 60miles) where we’ll catch the overnight ferry to Dieppe. From there it’s a steady 190km (120miles) to the centre of Paris where we’ll finish on the Champs Elysees. It’s going to be gruelling, over 3x the distance either Mike or I had completed before starting training, but we’re both excited by the challenge and proud to support the Trust. [/p][p][br][/p][p]Jacobi is a great wee boy, best friend of my twin boys and it can be difficult to imagine what the future might hold – sometimes it feels bleak but Duchenne UK are supporting a lot of good research and promising trials which give us hope of a cure, so I’ll be proud to complete the Duchenne Dash in support of the Trust and appreciate any support you can provide to the cause.
