My story

[p]Thanks for checking out my fundraiser for CPSL Mind and The Prince's Trust! [/p][p]Here’s the short version: this May, I'm doing an 84 mi (135 km) solo walk along Hadrian's Wall, from the East Coast to West, to raise money and awareness for two fantastic charities, and to challenge myself to walk further in 5 days than ever before. [/p][p]If that's enough for you, just hop straight to the donation button, or read on to find out more:[/p][p]Why walking and why the fundraiser? [/p][p]Over the past few years, I've developed a love for walking and it's had a really positive impact on my personal wellbeing. I used to be one of the kids that would get picked last for any sporty activity and I hated most forms of physical exercise with a passion, especially if there was competition involved. Even as an adult, if I couldn’t get a bus or a lift, I wouldn’t bother going.[/p][p]Then a few years ago, I bought a smart-watch that insistently recommended 10,000 steps a day. At first, I struggled to hit that goal consistently, but a mix of stubbornness, long playlists and some augmented reality games pushed me past my inertia and got me into the habit. After a while I started to look forward to my walks - they gave me time and space to contemplate whatever was on my mind, as well as an opportunity to listen to music and appreciate nature. I found a lot of peace and freedom in walking and it had a very positive influence on my mental health and also self-confidence.[/p][p]I’m always looking to push my boundaries, and although I’m accustomed to doing long single-day walks, I’ve never done a multi-day hiking trip. So, I’ve decided to really stretch myself and walk the breadth of the country at Hadrian’s wall. It’s 84 miles (135km) in total and I’m planning to complete it in 5 days.[/p][p]Any support you can offer on this journey would be deeply appreciated and will go towards a couple of great causes.[/p][p]I’m pretty lucky in being able to just walk some of my problems away - there are lots of fantastic people who have mental health issues that can't be dealt with the same way. There are also many young people who haven't had the same opportunities in life, who could really do with some support.[/p][p]Luckily there are great charities out there who help young people in those situations and I'd love to be able to support them and raise awareness for their important work.[/p][p]Who will receive the money?[/p][p]The money will be shared evenly between the two charities:[/p][p]CPSL Mind: a local mental health charity that provides support to individuals experiencing mental health problems, both during periods of crisis and on the road to recovery.[/p][p]The Prince’s Trust: a charity that believes that every young person should have the chance to succeed and helps 11- to 30-year olds who are unemployed or struggling to transform their lives.[/p][p]Where will your money go to and how will it help?[/p][p]I’m financing my whole trip out of my own pockets, so all of the donated money will flow straight into the pockets of the charities. And not only that, my employer Jagex will double all contributions at the end - so any amount you can spare, even a small one, will have a big impact.[/p][p]Here are some things that the money could help with:[/p][p]With £90 the Princes Trust can pay a member of their phone helpline for a day, providing advice and guidance to 38 young people. £500 can found their phone hotline for a whole day, providing support to 173 young people! £1,500 funds a place on their four day enterprise course, so a young aspiring entrepreneur can begin their journey into self-employment![/p][p]Money that goes to CPSL Mind will support their important work, like their STOP Suicide campaign, which aims to prevent suicides by raising awareness of the warning signs and giving members of the public the skills/confidence to have open conversations about suicide if they are worried about someone – and help those at risk to stay safe.[/p][p]I don’t have money, but I want to help![/p][p]And you can! By sharing this with people on social media and talking about either this fundraiser or any of the charities, you are contributing a lot and it is just as appreciated as any cash donation.[/p][p] What am I gaining from this?[/p][p]A lot of motivation - any support you can give means a great deal to me! When I planned the walk, I thought it would be great if it was more than just a holiday or personal challenge. Knowing that every kilometre contributes to a better life for someone will help when the going gets tough. And, as I’m going alone, knowing that I have you there with me in thought will provide a salve to my sore feet! :) [/p]
