My story

[p]Reverence for Life UK supports community and environmental projects around the world, which are in line with our charity vision to unify people and planet and also embracing Albert Schweitzer’s philosophy of 'reverence for life'. As a small charity with limited resources, we look for opportunities to build long term, personal connections with the people and projects we support, ensuring that our fundraising efforts can have a meaningful, ‘local’ impact, with funds going directly to the end beneficiaries.[/p][p]In Tanzania, we have a very strong connection with the charity, Value Life Tanazania (VALITA), who have become not only our local partner there, but also our close friends. We now have 3 live projects with VALITA, in and around Dar es Salaam.[/p][p]Our first project is supporting their outreach work to provide much needed life support for widows and orphans of HIV, which is still such an enornmous challenge in Tanzania. Our funding has helped VALITA to purchase 5 acres of land to build accommodation and be a community centre for those most in need (see below photos of the building we funded with the first residents on the steps). The long term vision for this "Garden of Humanity" is to become a self sustaining community and to rehabilitate people back into wider society.[/p][p]The other two projects in Dar are working with two schools (a nursery and a primary school), both with challenges around funding and basic requirements such as no provision for drinking water and poor sanitation, as well as lack of classroom space, desks/chairs, books, games and school uniforms/clothes. We co-ordinate and send shipments of essential school items as well as raise capital for funding larger projects (e.g. financing a new classroom or drilling a bore hole for water). [/p][p]I made a trip to Dar es Salaam last year with two other Trustees (donations were raised to fund the trip), to build on our personal relationships with local stakeholders and to see how the projects were developing. One thing that struck me above all was the level of impact Reverence for Life UK was having on the people connected to our projects. By seeing it for myself, I had a such strong feeling of responsibility to continue this support, as it is so clear how our efforts are helping to transform and in some cases save lives. It is absolutely about enabling long term sustainable change and empowering people to build a better future for themselves.[/p][p]It is my privilege to be the current Chair of this wonderful charity and together with the amazing team of Trustees, take a personal responsibility to fundraise for our projects. Last year, we were fortunate enough to secure 2 places in the London Marathon for myself and our Treasurer, Paul Cockhill, however, unfortunately due to injury I was unable to finish my training and had to defer my place. Happily though, Paul did manage to heroically run all 26.2 miles, and whilst at the time I felt I’d rather let the team down, now is my chance in 2020, to finish what I started![/p][p]Please help to keep me motivated by donating generously - it would be wonderful to exceed my target and make the pain worthwhile!![/p]
