[p]In April 2020 I will be running the Marathon Des Sables. Often regarded as the toughest footrace on earth, it is a 251km (equivalent to 6 marathons) ultra-marathon completed over 6 days. The race takes place in the sand dunes, wadis and hills of the Sahara Desert. Each stage varies in length, however much of the event centres around the infamous double day, which is around 85km long. The heat inevitably adds to the daily fatigue with temperatures hovering around 40 degrees during the day and dropping close to zero at night. With the exception of local tents for accommodation, runners must be self-sufficient, carrying all food, clothing and other essentials to get through the race. [/p][p]I will be raising money for Walking With The Wounded. Established in 2010, WWTW supports vulnerable military veterans who have been physically, mentally or socially disadvantaged by their service. The aim of the charity is to assist veterans with their reintegration into society. Future employment is at the heart of this journey and provides a sustainable future for them and their families. [/p][p]Having served 10 years in the British Army it is a cause close to my heart having witnessed first hand the struggles that some veterans experience as they transition from the military into civilian life. Sadly veteran suicide rates are increasing and with nearly 15,000 service personnel leaving the military each year veteran support will always be required. [/p][p]Any donations, however small fundraising support is greatly appreciated.
