My story

[p]On the 3rd July, I will be taking part in the 'Duchenne Dash Around the World' event at Goodwood Motor Circuit, forming part of 300 cyclists aiming to collectively cycle the circumference of the globe (40,000kms) in just 12hrs.[/p][p]Also I'll be taking part in the 'Fred Whitton Challenge', a sportive in the Lake District that has been dubbed the 'hardest of them all'. It's 113miles long with a ridiculous 3700m of elevation gain.[/p][p]And, just because I'm a big fan of lycra (& chamois cream!), I'm also going to ride the South Downs Way (100miles off road) and attempt to complete in sub 12hrs.[/p][p]All with the goal to raise awareness and donations to support Duchenne UK;[/p][p]Unfortunately this disease effects very close friends of mine, as their son (Henry, Henners to his mates!) was diagnosed with Duchenne 4 years ago at the age of 3. So if you are able to sponsor, no matter how little, I'd be hugely grateful.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a genetic disease that causes muscle weakness and wasting.[/p][p]Children born with DMD have a fault, known as a mutation, on their dystrophin gene.[/p][p]Genes are smaller sections of your bodies DNA. They are the instructions that make our bodies work.[/p][p]For people with DMD, the fault on the gene means that they cannot produce dystrophin, which is a protein that protects muscles. Without dystrophin, muscles get damaged more easily and so muscle strength and function is weakened.[/p][p]DMD almost always affect boys, and is typically diagnosed in childhood. There are around 2,500 patients in the UK and an estimated 300,000 worldwide. It is classified as a rare disease.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Thank you for the support.[/p]
