My story

[p]So, my call to arms, and hands, into pockets...[/p][p]My Mum retired back in 2014 after 40 years of looking after other people as a nurse. One of those selfless people. Worked all over the country helping people, and made us all very proud by simply doing too good a job to be ignored by the powers that be, ending up as Chief Nurse for the South East.[/p][p]When she retired, we were all delighted that she was going to start doing something’s for herself for a change. But, just a couple of years later, Mum received the diagnoses that so many now seem to hear from a doctor - Cancer. Mum's is an extremely rare blood cancer called Mantle Cell Lymphoma, incurable and characterised by the aggressive nature of its growth once activated. [/p][p]Mum had a couple of years of reviews where the cancer remained indolent, or 'sleeping'. And then the dreaded news that it had activated and was taking hold very aggressively. [/p][p]Mum has been an absolute warrior, enduring a 6 month program of chemo so harsh that even the cancer nurses winced when they saw the treatment plan for the first time. She took to it like Mum does, practically, stoically and with a remarkable sense of humour. But is was bloody tough and thankfully has treated the cancer into remission for now. However cause for celebration is muted because MCL never really goes away and it will come back at some point. Mum is living one day at a time and making the most of her life as an awesome Granny.[/p][p]I decided I wanted to do something to help Bloodwise, a charity dedicated to funding worldwide research into Blood Cancer, to support people like Mum and continue to improve survival rates and quality of life for sufferers. [/p][p]I have always admired the healthy souls who line up for the London Marathon. So determined to help good causes that they have run for miles just to get to the start line. I always convinced myself I didn't have the time with work and this and that to train. Well this year, and in light of the real struggle Mum has been through, I decided that those excuse had just about run out of juice.[/p][p]I want to raise as much as I can to help the thousands of granny's, mums, dads, brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles who will have to deal with this horrible disease. I also want to doff my cap to Mum who endured a 6 month chemo marathon with a smile on her face. I very much doubt I will manage 26 miles with a smile on my face.[/p][p]Please donate what you can, it will be greatly appreciated[/p][p]Cheers[/p][p]James x[/p]
