My story

[p]My dodgy knees and I have decided it’s a good idea to run our first ever marathon...[/p][p]During the long training runs, the thought of raising some money for a good cause keeps me from stopping and putting my feet up at the nearest pub.[/p][p] I am raising funds for Compassion in World Farming (CIWF), an animal welfare charity who work to improve the lives of the millions of animals in the food industry. [/p][p]CIWF is the world’s leading farm animal welfare organisation. It was founded by a dairy farmer who saw ?rst-hand how the demand for cheap food was having a devastating effect on farm animals, the environment and humans. CIWF’s aim is to end factory farming, the world’s largest cause of cruelty to animals.[/p][p]They continuously campaign for legislation to achieve better standards of animal welfare in the food production industry. They punch well above their weight and have huge influence on legislation and industry. [/p][p]One of their current campaigns relates to honest labeling on meat to show how animals are reared. Since 2004 it has been law to distinguish ‘free range’ from ‘caged hen eggs’ but the same legislation does not apply to meat. As with eggs, many people would be happy to pay a little extra for higher welfare meat, but they are not given that choice, and so farmers who raise their animals in a higher welfare environment aren’t compensated for doing so. https://www.ciwf.org.uk/our-campaigns/honest-labelling/[/p][p] I would be super grateful if you can please donate whatever you can... Barclays have offered to match pound for pound the first £1,000 raised [/p][p]Thank you![/p][p]James[/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p] Today, around 70% of the UK’s farmed animals are intensively reared. Behind closed doors these animals are kept in unnatural conditions, pushed beyond their physical limits. As well as the immense suffering caused by caging and crowding, factory farming is deeply damaging to public health, the environment and our ability to feed the world’s growing population.[/p][p] Compassion in World Farming campaigns peacefully and has constructive dialogue to change food business policy and legislation to end all factory farming practices. Over 1.7 billion animals are set to benefit each year from Compassion’s work globally but there is much more to do; an estimated two thirds (over 50 billion animals) are in factory farming systems every year.[/p][p] With your support, Compassion in World Farming will end horrific farming practices worldwide and spark a new era of humane food and farming. [/p][p] Find out more on ciwf.org. Compassion in World Farming International is a registered charity in England and Wales (registered charity number 1095050).[/p][p] [/p][p]I have added some very kind donations given via CAF by Emma T, Jim and James P to the 'raised offline’ total [/p][p]Not currently including the £1,000 to be donated by Barclays into the total.[/p]
