My story

[p]STOP PRESS!!![/p][p][br][/p][p]The climb is complete!! 3 days ahead of schedule, I finally completed the last of my 526 ascents (and descents) of the stairwell in my block of flats. A total height gained and dropped of 8849 metres!! I don't want to climb another step in my life!! I also calculated that I travelled around 32.5 kms horizontally during the challenge - not a lot but more than I had expected.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Even better, you out there have been absolutely fantastic and enormously generous. We beat the initial target within 2 days and we have beaten the second target a few days ago, and have, with Gift Aid, raised more than £1500 for each of these great charities!! What a fantastic effort and my huge thanks to all who have supported me.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Where did it all start? And in the beginning........[/p][p][br][/p][p]What better way to start 2021 than by opening my front door and climbing Mount Everest - and coming back down again!!?? Well it certainly seemed like a good idea to me and that's what I'm doing![/p][p][br][/p][p]In my block of flats, there are 91 steps from top to bottom and I've calculated that I only need to climb (and descend) the stairwell a mere 526 times, which is 47,866 steps, to climb the equivalent height of Mount Everest (8849 metres). I'm aiming to do this during the month of January 2021.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Why am I doing this? Apart from burning off some of the excesses of the Christmas season, I'm aiming to raise a minimum of £500 (now increased to £2000) to be shared between 2 charities that mean a lot to me. They are Blind Veterans UK and the Macular Society.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Blind Veterans UK, formerly called St Dunstans, supports ex-service men and women who have sight loss, either as a result of their service, or in later life. They gave me fabulous rehabilitation training when I lost my sight in an explosives accident in 1986.[/p][p][br][/p][p]The Macular Society supports people who have central vision loss through conditions like macular disease, which is the most common cause of sight loss in the UK.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Please consider giving generously and support me in my efforts to help both of these extremely worthwhile charities. All money raised will be split 50/50 between them.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Thanks in advance![/p]

So well done. I take an interest in the Macular Society in memory of my dad, always an active and enthusiastic man. Glad to contribute a little to these good causes.
