My story

[p][br][/p][p]Walking the Camino de Santiago[/p][p][br][/p][p]Thanks so much to all of you who have donated as I started my walk. I heard at the last minute that my fundraising will be matched up to a total of £1,000 - so have increased my target as well. Every donation is now worth double - a wonderful bonus for my charity. This is my story...[/p][p]I walked the first half (240 miles) of the Camino 2 years ago with the intention of finishing it all in one go. Unfortunately I picked up a blister which became infected and meant I had to stop and come home. The friend that I was walking with had gone home a few days before me as she too had picked up an injury. [/p][p]So... I leave on August 28th and, all things being equal, will arrive in Sahagún that evening. I will meet up with my friend, who will have started from Burgos, and we will then continue together, hopefully to the end - Santiago de Compostela![/p][p]The plan is to walk between 12-14 miles a day which, with a couple of rest days, should mean we arrive in Santiago on the 17th of September. Last time I raised money for Heart to Heart Shanghai, a charity that I volunteered for when we lived there. This time it will be The Brigitte Trust. I have been a volunteer for just over a year and the charity offers support to people with any life-threatening illness, particularly focusing on emotional support and being there to listen.[/p][p]September 4th - Quick update! T shirt photo is outside the cathedral in León with photos along route. Slight hitch in that I developed a blister that needed some tlc. I used the bus on Saturday, León to Villadangos then two short days into Astorga. We are having a rest day tomorrow before beginning our climb into the mountains. We head for Rabanel on Wednesday. According to the book we have 161.7 miles to go! I’ll be sharing more images of my walk so please feel free to donate as I go.[/p][p]Wednesday 5th - Despite thunder, lightning and rain we trucked on today. To be fair the worst of the rain was over by the end of breakfast but we could still see the most amazing lightning. Having decided to be kind to ourselves and walk shorter days we have just finished about 16 miles. The photos are of today’s walk from Astorga to Foncebadón. Tomorrow we will walk up to Cruz de Ferro one of the most iconic monuments on the Camino and then on to Molinaseca. 145 miles to go![/p][p] September 6th - Reaching Cruz de Ferro was an incredible feeling. I have wanted to go there for so many years. (The picture here does not capture its beauty and how special it was for Jan due to the limitations of the website)[/p][p]September 8th - 9th On Saturday and Sunday we walked from Villafranca de Bierza to O’Cebreiro. So early morning mist gave way to stunning views as we climbed from about 600m to 1300m. Hard work but fabulous views. The photo with the Galicia sign is really significant as you begin to feel you are almost there. [/p][p]September 13th evening update from Jan [/p][p]We had a traffic jam Camino style with the cows and the dogs were just fast asleep in the middle of the road! Today we walked 15.4 miles into Palas de Rei. Tomorrow is a short day to Melide where we will meet up with my daughter and walk into Santiago together. All things being equal we will walk into Santiago on Monday. I can’t quite believe I am almost there![/p][p]September 19th[/p][p]Well I guess this is my last Camino post. I’m at the airport in Santiago de Compostela waiting for my flight home. I don’t want to stop, I want to keep on walking...but stop I must. [/p][p]The photos are of the Cathedral, St James and the Botafumeiro at the end of the Pilgrim Mass. It was an unbelievably emotional moment. I thought walking into the plaza and standing in front of the Cathedral would be my perfect end but it wasn’t, it was the Pilgrim Mass, the Botafumeiro and sitting with other pilgrims that I had met along the way.[/p][p]It has been an amazing experience on so many levels. The people I have met along the way, many of whom I will never see again, but others where real friendships have been formed. I want to thank everyone who sponsored me and for adding that extra level of focus![/p][p]Best wishes[/p][p]Jan[/p][p]My charity's website is www.brigittetrust.org if you'd like to find out more.
