My story

[p]My Challenge is to Pedal to the Peaks (Ben Nevis to Snowdon to Scafell) setting off on 19/7/19[/p][p]Prior to this I aim to complete Kendal Triathlon on 28/4/19 and The White Rose Bike Sportive on 23/6/19[/p][p]This is why...[/p][p]A few months after my 40th birthday in 2016 I was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of oesophageal cancer. Through 2016 I underwent equally aggressive treatment, which although successful to date, has life changing consequences. [/p][p]This treatment included chemotherapy, radiotherapy and major surgery- I had an oesophagectomy under Mr Li's team at Manchester Royal Infirmary in September 2016. Gradually I have regained my strength, confidence and courage to tackle the residual side effects of an oesophagectomy and living under the 'umbrella' of cancer to undertake a number of physical challenges. These include the London Marathon in April 2017 in aid of Cancercare and a Frog Graham Round (a swim run event in the Lake District) along with many adventures with family and friends in Cumbria (our home) and on holiday. [/p][p]During 2017, I was tested for the BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene as I have a family history of ovarian and breast cancer; my mother died 21 years ago after a long battle with ovarian cancer. I was BRCA1 positive. So to reduce my risk of developing cancer I had my ovaries removed in November 2017 and a double mastectomy in February 2019. [/p][p]Once again, I have started rebuilding my body and mind through being outside and exercising. This has always been intrinsic to my life and although I may never compete like I once did (I am a keen fellrunner and cyclist), I know it will always bring me a fulfilled sense of happiness and make me who I am. [/p][p]I have a daughter,Tess, who is 7. Through all of this she has given me the reason to get out of bed and keep me smiling. She has a huge amount of empathy for one so young and, at times, our roles have reversed. Whilst my amazing husband, Matt, has been there and supported me, calmly and patiently, in every way he can. Tess, of course may have the BRCA1 gene and I want there to be every chance for her in the future to have the best care, screening and support. [/p][p]I want to do a challenge this summer that might inspire others to get out there, return to what they enjoy, set a goal, or have the confidence to start something new. I also want to raise money for charities that are so important to me and develop a greater understanding of cancer. Even if I only inspire one person it is worth it! [/p][p]As a teacher I also know how important these charities are for children and how so many of them are effected by cancer in some way. Cancercare is currently trying to improve their support services for teenagers who are affected by cancer along with support for any bereavement. [/p][p]My challenge is to climb each of the 3 peaks: Ben Nevis, Snowdon and Scafell Pike and cycle between them in less than 2 weeks. Prior to this I aim to complete Kendal Triathlon on 28/4/19 and The White Rose Cycling Sportive on 23/6/19.[/p][p]If you would like to, please sponsor me, if not please think of me pedalling and panting away, follow my progress or join me somewhere on the way![/p][p]ps I now have an itinerary. Please email me if you are interested in seeing it.[/p][p]However, dates for the peaks are: [/p][p]Ben Nevis Friday 19th July. Snowdon Thursday 25th July. Scafell Pike Monday 29th July.[/p][p]I am holding a talk to promote my challenge on Thursday 13th June at Wilfs in Staveley. Please contact myself, Cancercare Kendal or Wilfs for tickets. [/p][p]jhreedy@hotmail.co.uk[/p][p]NB We will use some of the money raised to pay for fuel and accommodation; these will be kept to a minimum. Matt and Tess will join me from the end of the Scotland leg in a motorhome which is being very kindly loaned by our fab friends- Paul and Lou at Kong Adventure, Keswick.[/p][p]3.5.19[/p][p]I did Kendal Sprint Triathlon on Sunday and LOVED it. Today I had my first 'run' on the fells- no walking![/p][p]15.5.19[/p][p]It was a beautiful evening so Tess and I went to Keswick to do Latrigg fell race. Tess disappeared off with the under 9s and came back first girl- slightly by default as she followed the flags correctly to the finish-the navigational skills of her mother! I loved my race and finished smiling. Bring on sunny evening fell races! Managed a couple of hours on the bike today- need to keep getting those miles in. [/p][p]27.6.19[/p][p]It is all getting closer. I am excited about a long bike ride tomorrow with friends. I did a fantastic Sportive on Sunday and loved it- 86 miles in my home county of North Yorks with a fab friend. Wanting the sun to keep shining.[/p][p][br][/p]
