My story

[p]Five years ago, I wasn’t sure if I was going to see my daughter be 4 years old. On 28th March 2021, I feel incredibly privileged to be celebrating her 9th birthday.[/p][p]On the 23rd March 2016, I was diagnosed with an advanced, rare and aggressive form of oesophageal cancer. After exploring different treatment options, we opted for an equally aggressive from of treatment to give me the best chance of survival. The odds were against me. However, I did get through a number of cycles of chemo, radiotherapy and major surgery to be here today.[/p][p]In addition to this, in 2017, I was diagnosed with the BRCA1 gene, meaning that I have an increased risk of ovarian and breast cancer. At the age of 50, my mother died of ovarian cancer. My sister and I were then 18 and 22. The diagnosis of the BRCA1 gene resulted in me having preventative surgeries, again this was not without its complications and repercussions, both mentally and physically. [/p][p]Through this time, I have continued to remain as physically active as possible (it has always been integral to my life) and enjoyed being outside in the beautiful county of Cumbria, where I live. [/p][p]My body is not what it was physiologically and these ‘unchosen challenges’ shape us into different beings. It is never over; my treatments and surgeries have long term implications. The shadow that cancer leaves is never far away. With every unknown pain or symptom comes great concern from my GP and myself. [/p][p]However, life is good. I am lucky- thanks to the amazing NHS. I have a wonderful family and a fantastic network of friends.[/p][p]In 2019 I completed the Pedal to the Peaks https://www.pedaltothepeaks.org/ for Cancercare and Cancer Research UK, raising over £5000. [/p][p]This year, I aim to complete ‘The Big 5’ as it will be 5 years since my diagnosis and (hopefully) 5 years in September of being in remission which is quite a milestone. During this time, I will have had 5 operations. As it has been pointed out, it might be easier to do 5 tequila shots but I wish to raise £5,000 for these two amazing charities which are close to my heart. [/p][p]I aim to spread some ‘hope’ to those who are going through their own personal ‘unchosen challenges’, develop an understanding of cancer whilst challenging myself with different sports. [/p][p]The Big 5 are ‘chosen challenges’ which I hope to enjoy, share and provide a chance celebrate the past 5 years with my amazing family and friends. I hope that you can support me by donating, following me, or joining me somewhere. [/p][p]The Big 5 are:[/p][p]1. The Cumbria Traverse (a 30-mile-long distance route across the fells from Broughton Mills to Keswick) to be completed mid-April 2021.[/p][p]2. The Frog Whitton (a 96-mile bike ride over the Cumbria passes and a swim totalling 6 miles) - mid to late July 2021.[/p][p]3.Swimming the length of Coniston (5 miles) - mid to late August 2021.[/p][p]4. The Cross Bay Walk (Arnside to Kent Bank) 29th August. https://www.cancercare.org.uk/news/cross-bay-walk-2021[/p][p]5.A beach ride on horseback- early to mid -September 2021. [/p][p]Plus, many training miles![/p][p]Each of these challenges have individual significance to my family and I.[/p][p]‘CancerCare is a unique independent charity dedicated to helping people affected by cancer and other potentially life limiting conditions living in North Lancashire and South Cumbria.’[/p][p]‘Cancer Research UK is a cancer research and awareness charity in the United Kingdom, formed on 4 February 2002 by the merger of The Cancer Research Campaign and the Imperial Cancer Research Fund. Its aim is to reduce the number of deaths from cancer.’[/p][p]The photos below reflect some of the events of the past 5 years.[/p]
