My story

[p]UPDATE: As of 1730 on Sunday 20 December, 89 year old Jeffrey, has now completed all of his walks. Jeffrey walked a total number of 111 miles in his series of walking challenges. You can still donate and help him reach his target. [/p][p]89 year old Parachute Regiment veteran Jeffrey Long MBE has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for charities through a number of walking challenges. This year, Jeffrey is setting himself the challenge of 10 walks and is expecting to walk at least 100 miles, in support of the RNLI and the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund. [/p][p]Two notable walks taking place in September - the first is taking place on 18th will retrace the route of Halifax Bomber LW210 from 426 Squadron. The Halifax took off from RAF Linton on Ouse on 5 March 1945, gained height and circled the RAF base to allow other aircraft to do the same. The crew then set a southerly course and as they approached York, the unforecasted freezing conditions led to the pilot losing control of the aircraft and went into an uncontrollable dive. Despite the pilot being able to gain some control, the outer starboard engine broke away before the aircraft crashed into Nunthorpe Grove, York, demolishing 2 houses on the street. 15mins after the crash, the 500lb bomb exploded further damaging surrounding houses before another bomb exploded shortly after. [/p][p]Jeffrey will walk 11 miles from RAF Linton on Ouse to Nunthorpe Grove, York to commemorate 80 years since the crash. Jeffrey will lay poppy crosses on Nunthorpe Grove in remembrance of the 6 crew and 5 civillians/rescuers killed back in 1945. [/p][p]The second will take place on 24th September walking 18 miles from Bridlington RNLI station to Flamborough before finishing at Filey RNLI station, to highlight the incredible work of the RNLI. The volunteer lifeboat crews provide a 24-hour rescue service in the UK and Ireland, and seasonal lifeguards look after people on busy beaches. Our Flood Rescue Team helps those affected by flooding.[/p][p]RNLI crews and lifeguards have saved over 142,700 lives since 1824 but they are more than a rescue service. They influence, supervise and educate people too. The Community Safety teams explain the risks and share safety knowledge with anyone going out to sea or to the coast. And the international teams work with like-minded organisations to help tackle drowning in communities at risk all around the world.[/p][p]Jeffrey will then take on a series of other walks to reach his 100 mile target. [/p][p]Please support and donate what you can. [/p][p]Jeffrey. [/p][p] [/p]
