My story

[p]Challenges completed so far:[/p][p]The 3 Peaks Challenge: Climbing the height of Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis on my stairs over 48 hours. I did 624 flights of stairs, 930 big box steps and 1240 medium box steps. Although i did this in chunks over 24 hours, in total I spent only just over 6 hours actually climbing, which considering it would take me about 11 hours to do the actual hills (and when you walk them you don't start from sea-level like I did for this challenge) is a bit nuts. I could barely walk the next day...[/p][p]Indoor Ironman: 140.6miles in 17h33. I completed 2 hours of resistance-band simulated swimming, 112 miles on my bike, hooked up to a turbo trainer so I could ride it indoors, and went out for my 1 exercise a day, which was a 26.2 miles run around my local area and maintaining social distancing. The hardest thing about this was doing it completely on my own. I love a solo challenge, but normally for the big endurance races you have friendly marshals and friends or family to give you a hug and help you get some dinner at the finish line. This time around I had none of that, and it made keeping the motivation up much harder![/p][p][br][/p][p]Challenges to be completed:[/p][p]Cumulative stair climb: I have continued to climb the odd smaller hill here and there and am keeping a cumulative log to see what height I can reach by the end of lockdown! Depending on how long it goes on for I hope to reach the height of Kili (the largest mountain I've done so far), or even Everest (from sea-level)![/p][p]Skipping challenge: This one is still in the making, but I have a skipping rope and space to skip both indoors and outdoors, so some sort of ultra-skipping challenge might occur...[/p][p] ...What do you think!?[/p][p][br][/p][p]But why am I doing all this?[/p][p]We are living in worrying times- the coronavirus-related death rate is still on the up, and people across the country are having to stay inside. For some this is particularly incapacitating, such as for adults with learning disabilities who rely on social groups (now cancelled) and support staff visits (much reduced) in order to have meaningful activities and interactions on a day to day basis.[/p][p]Oxford and District Mencap is a charity I have been involved in for the last 7 years, volunteering on their summer holiday camps for adults with learning disabilities. This year we are working to create virtual events and activities that the campers can still engage with from lockdown. As ever the work of ODM requires funds, and this year in particular those funds will go a long way to improving the lives and mental wellbeing of the many adults with learning disabilities who benefit from the charity.[/p][p]I also work for the NHS, but as I have asthma myself am currently not able to work frontline. Instead I am supporting on the phone/via virtual resources (please see and share: www.copingwithcoronavirus.co.uk). However, frontline NHS workers are doing so much more than their job remits right now, so I wanted to do something extra and active to help as well, by raising money for the NHS Charities Together Covid-19 Urgent Appeal.[/p][p]Please help me to support these two wonderful causes in this difficult time by sponsoring me to complete some Lockdown Ultra-Challenges. [/p][p]As many of you know, I love a challenge and am a keen endurance athlete in my spare time. Last year I climbed Kilimanjaro, completed the 'World's Toughest Half-Ironman' (Half-X), completed a solo 3 week wild-camping bike tour while stopping to climb Munros, completed my first un-guided watersport wild-camping expedition, and did a few ultra-marathons (including a 100km run, which took me 14 hours!). This year I was down to do an Ironman (3.8km swim, 112 mile bike ride, and a marathon run), the Welsh 3000s (the 15 [gt]3000ft peaks in Wales in 24 hours), and a running expedition to cross Iceland. As these aren't happening, or at least not until later, I need some new challenges- ones that will keep me indoors![/p][p][br][/p][p]Please help me by:[/p][p]a) Suggesting challenges that fit within the lockdown regulations/shielding guidance[/p][p]b) Sponsoring me, and in doing so donating to two wonderful causes who could really do with some more funds right now.[/p][p][br][/p]
