My story

[p]This physical challenge is a venture I feel fortunate to be a part of inorder to support others with mental health wellbeing needs whilst raising funds for Healthy Minds in the process.[/p][p] Walking 26.2 miles across Calderdale in the Virtual London Marathon, on Sunday 3rd October, is a positive way to acknowledge my own return to good mental health and productive relationship with Healthy Minds. [/p][p][br][/p][p]I first became aware of Healthy Minds in 2018 when I attended one of their drop-In sessions at Noah's Ark in Halifax. I was taken there by my then Support Worker, who was attempting to re-engage me with the outside world following a bout of Agoraphobia. This was after several months of not being able to leave my bedroom, let alone venture out from my parent’s home where I was staying at the time. [/p][p][br][/p][p]In my mid-teens I was diagnosed with CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) but it wasn't until my mid-20's that I was diagnosed with anxiety and depression. It began soon after I'd supported my now ex-wife whilst she suffered with PND (Postnatal Depression) following the birth of our third child, we had three in slightly under three years. [/p][p][br][/p][p]Following my wife’s recovery, I suffered bouts every two to three years, leading up to a full mental breakdown after we separated and divorced, some ten years later. I then lost my job, which I loved, and spiralled into a state of utterly debilitating depression for a couple of years. [/p][p][br][/p][p]Upon my own recovery in September 2019, I happened to bump into Kim, previously of Healthy Minds' young people’s 'TimeOut' provision, who I remembered from that drop-in session the previous year. As I am a professional Youth & Community Worker I enquired as to the possibility of volunteering within their team. [/p][p][br][/p][p]Since that time, apart from the disturbance of COVID-19, I have gone on to volunteer for other projects within Healthy Minds, including their allotment at Pye Nest, as part of their Recovery & Support programme, and also Co-Facilitated Workshops. I am also a Walk Leader for some of the monthly 'Walk to Wellbeing' activities... which has led me here, to tackle the Virtual London Marathon, along with Anneliese & Louise! [/p][p][br][/p][p]Through the lived experience of my own struggles with poor mental health and wellbeing I hope through joining in with fund raising opportunities such as this that together we can support each other with our own individual battles. [/p][p][br][/p][p]Please give a little if you can, I know your kind donation will be used to support others in our local communities that might at some stage in their lives need Health Minds. [/p][p][br][/p][p]Cheers Jim💭[/p]
