My story

[p]Saltergate Children’s Home, Ethiopia[/p][p] [/p][p]Jo Heath – ‘running for those that can’t’[/p][p] [/p][p]Every year in Ethiopia hundreds of children are orphaned – make that thousands since the war started, crops failed and the spread of covid-19 accelerated. When this happens the prospects are bleak. With no welfare support over 100,000 children live on the streets of Addis Ababa and rely on handouts to survive.[/p][p]One such child, abandoned at a few hours old, faced an uncertain future until a doctor desperate to find a home for the baby called us – ‘please help’ and Saltergate Children’s Home, Ethiopia was up and running. We called the baby Amanuel and today he is sitting in the classroom with his friends working hard. Free from poverty and equipped with an education one day he will be able to choose the course of his life – that’s a bright future.[/p][p]SCH is establishing secure, legally-based homes in Ethiopia where children are sheltered, clothes, fed, have access to medical facilities and a progressive education. We have supported our two ‘big girls’ Danait and Delina for five years now and seen them grow into beautiful young women on the verge of graduating from university. Their horrific past is just that – in the past.[/p][p]We currently care for 63 children and young adults. All the school-age children are in the classroom, those who cannot walk have wheelchairs and those who are blind have teachers who have the appropriate expertise to meet their needs. Danait and Delina are proving to be good role-models for children who are taking their first steps on the academic and, beyond that, vocational path to independence. [/p][p]Our homes provide a loving, caring environment founded on Christian principles, respect for culture and the strength of the family. The trustees have wide experience in education and business management both in the UK and overseas and the charity’s constitution provides a robust framework in accordance with Charity Commission guidelines. [/p][p]All the charity’s running costs are met by the trustees so every penny donated is used for the children’s care. Close ties with communities, hospitals and other charities in Ethiopia ensure that a supportive network is in place and the trustees are regular visitors to Addis Ababa. Surprisingly, perhaps, so are some of our supporters who have travelled to Ethiopia and talked and played with the children. If you are ever in Addis Ababa please drop in![/p]
