My story

[p]Thanks for taking time to visit my fundraising page.[/p][p]The official challenge: Cycle 720km from 01 July to 31 August.[/p][p]My additional challenge: Complete over 720km and 14,221m elevation gain over 2 weekends in August. 8 / 9 August and 15 / 16 August. This is along with my day commute which will see me totaling over 1,440km (twice the official challenge) [/p][p]This year as a result of the travel restrictions and lockdowns our planned Raid Pyrenees Challenge has been postponed until next year. This would have seen us cycling approximately 440miles or 720km within a 100hour window (4.5 days of cycling) from July 7th to 11th. On the cycle, we would have climbed 18 mandatory Cols with an overall elevation gain of 46,658ft or 14,221m similar to everesting 1.6 times. This would have been my 4th challenge in a bid to raise money for YMCA East Surrey who are celebrating their 150th anniversary.[/p][p] Unfortunately, I will not get to cycle up Col du Tourmalet (2115m) or other famous climbs regularly seen on the Tour de France this year. I do however still have this to look forward to next year.[/p][p] Although most of the world is on lockdown, the YMCA are still working hard in the community helping vulnerable children, young people and adults to belong, contribute and thrive. To do this they need our help through their challenges programme. Recently they suggested the idea of carrying out the original distance virtually, and given I had started training for the event, I thought it would be a good opportunity to help them out.[/p][p]We have been given 2 options to carry out the challenge, complete the distance between 01 July and 31 August or try to complete the challenge within the original 100hr time limit. Given work commitments, I have decided to complete the challenge over 2 weekends 8 / 9 August and 15 / 16 August. The plan is to complete over 720km and 14,221m elevation gain over these 2 weekends. I have a rough schedule of Zwift routes that will get me to the goal. This will include as many of the French-themed routes [possible, including Alpe de Zwift and Ven-Top (the Zwift versions of Alpe d'Huez and Ventoux). To add a bit of additional pain I am contemplating the additional challenge to vEverest one of the days which would mean doing multiple repetitions of either Alpe de Zwift or Ven-Top until I have a cumulative elevation gain of 8,848m in one ride which would take me around 11 to 12hrs.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Thanks for your support.[/p][p]Joe[/p]
