My story

[p]Sadly my Mother’s and my oldest brother’s final years were blighted by dementia. Fortunately they received loving, dedicated and stimulating care at home from their family. During their various periods in hospital or respite care, however, we noticed a deterioration in their mental well being. This is not a criticism of the professionals and carers who looked after them but was probably a consequence of disruption to their normal daily life and routine, unfamiliar surroundings, the lack of one to one engagement and social activity and stimulation in those settings.[/p][p]The Small Acts of Friendship programme, funded by the Friends of Brighton and Hove Hospitals, seeks to provide that loving and stimulating environment that my mother and brother received at home, for those receiving care in our local hospital, helping elderly patients retain dignity, social activity and mobility.[/p][p]Since its launch in November 2017 Small Acts of Friendship has helped over 1100 patients, and is now fundraising to support a second year of this programme, allowing us to build on what we have learned and to introduce improvements. [/p][p]The Friends of Brighton and Hove Hospitals, of which I am a Trustee, has already raised £45,000 through the kind generosity of local people, but we need a further £20,000 to support this programme during 2019 and hopefully expand it to serve those whose end of life care is being provided in hospital.[/p][p]It's more than ten years since I hung up my running shoes, but I am dusting them down and, together with 21 family members and friends, I will be running the Westminster Mile to raise money for Small Acts of Friendship. I hope you will be able to contribute by sponsoring me for this important cause.[/p][p]I am pleased to be supported in the family run at Westminster by Team Johnny Go Go Go who will be running with me (including grandchildren aged 9 - 22 :[/p][p]Damien Austin-Walker & Sharon Tynan and Oisín,[/p][p]Zoë Austin-Walker and Felix, Kitty, Tilly & Luke Acle;[/p][p]Luke & Nicole Ingerson and Letty & Jerome[/p][p]Niall Kelcher & Emily Hodges[/p][p]Matt Kelcher & Mili Patel[/p][p]Paul Ingerson [/p][p]Steve Affleck & Jan Walls and Leelah[/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p]
