My story

[p]3 years ago, our family suffered a truly devastating and awful tragedy, and without the incredible help of the Road Victims Trust, my wife Hana, would simply not be where she is today. [/p][p]Whilst travelling to attend my own mum’s funeral, my wife’s mum, my mother in-law, Jo Cairns, travelling in a car 1 hour ahead of us, was cruelly taken in a horrific car accident on the M25. The two adjacent junctions were shut for many hours, and both me, Hana and our children were caught in the subsequent traffic hold-up, completely unaware of what had happened. [/p][p]Not seeing her as we all filed into the funeral service and expecting her mum to already be there, Hana began to feel a deep-down dread that something had happened. Upon leaving the crematorium, only then did we learn the awful truth after seeing numerous ‘missed calls’ from an unknown number (traffic police) from the mobile phone we left in the car. The realization and comprehension of the unfolding situation in those first awful minutes in a crematorium car park will be forever etched in my family’s memory. [/p][p]There is much more to this event that is too upsetting to share further, however, it goes without saying that Hana, I, and some of those that witnessed the accident, owe the RVT our perpetual gratitude. Once a week for over 7 months, Lucy, one of the amazing RVT team, spoke with Hana and helped get her grief, upset, anger, despair, heartache, and many other turbulent emotions under better control. Hana still misses her mum terribly and never getting the chance to say goodbye weighs heavy. But without the help she received, I worry to think where the grief might have taken Hana. So, as way of thanks and recognition for the incredible work they do, I have committed to running the Virtual Virgin Money London Marathon on October 3rd. I have been in training for a while and feel 85% ready to run the full 26.2 miles. [/p][p]Please donate if you can, whatever feels comfortable. Road incidents affect us all in one way or another. Thankfully, death and life changing injury less so. However, the work that this charity does, and those similar to it is essential and, in many cases, positively life changing. [/p][p]Many thanks.
