My story

[p]I will be walking 86 miles from coast to coast following the World Heritage Site of Hadrian's Wall past Roman settlements and forts. There's history every step of the way.[/p][p]Mental health issues, including Depression, Anxiety, PTSD, Bipolar, ADHD are a silent unseen Illnesses and are a real concern for both military veterans and civilians. It doesn’t matter how old your are, it can affect everyone.[/p][p] I served onboard on HMS Coventry during the Falklands War when she was attacked by Argentinian aircraft. She was hit by 3 1,000 lb bombs ripping the ships side open. She capsized in 20 minutes and sank.[/p][p]I was diagnosed with PTSD in 2015 after nearly 30 years of silently suffering from mental health issues, having many referrals for different types of treatment. After 6 weeks residential treatment for trauma therapy in 2016 I continued my recovery with the multi award winning local veterans charity Forward Assist. They helped me through various means, including arranging support from life coach Polly Brennan for Adventures Coaching. This led me to embark on a challenge in 2018 to raise money for Forward Assist by doing the SAS selection route known as the Fan Dance Race, over Pen Y Fan in Wales. Newcastle Rugby Foundation heard about my challenge and invited me to a veterans event on Armistice Day 2017.The got me involved with Move Like a Pro, helped me with my training, nutritional needs and my well being. They believe the power of sport can help individuals to overcome personal/mental health issues. I completed the Fan Dance race at the age of 60. I was later awarded the Aviva Premiership Rugby Parliamentary Runner up achiever award in Parliament London. I was later nominated and won the Sport Newcastle unsung hero and achiever Award at their awards ceremony in Newcastle.[/p][p]I am still under treatment for PTSD/mental health issues and currently I’m having REMDR therapy. By using the power of both community projects and sport both charities can improve social isolation/exclusion and help peoples well-being. This in turn can lead to a better life. [/p][p] Mental health issues are a very personal issue which can isolate the sufferers from their surroundings. By raising funds for both veterans Forward Assist and the Newcastle Rugby Foundation, who are close to my heart, we can help them achieve their aims and improve their lives and families of the people who suffer from this unnoticed illness.[/p][p]Thank for taking the time to read my story.[/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p]
