Team story

[p]Having just retired we wanted a challenge to lead us into the next phase of our lives, we have both worked for 41 years in mental health in the NHS. This is one of the charities that John has raised money for through his book stall at Woodgrange Market E7. The Asha Trust is a charity that works with young people on the outskirts of Colombo, Sri Lanka. [/p][p]Asha Trust Holiday Programme [/p][p]Why is the holiday club so important?[/p][p] For many of the children and young people attending the Asha Centre, the school holidays can mean long weeks with only household chores and increased vulnerability to crime. Families struggling on very limited incomes mean trips outside the neighbourhood are rare, and overcrowding often leads to tension in the family. Children often spend most of their time out and about in the neighbourhood, with minimal adult supervision. [/p][p]The Asha Holiday Club provides a safe, positive environment, with caring staff and a varied programme of creative and stimulating activities. The children get a chance to try new things and have fun, whilst developing their own leadership and team work skills. On the final day everyone goes to the beach. The inclusive nature of the Holiday Club, where children with disabilities play an active part, gives everyone an opportunity to practice empathy and understanding – a key goal of the Centre following the Easter attacks. [/p][p]All the funds raised by Laura & John’s Cycle Ride will go to support the Asha Holiday Club. [/p]
