My story

[p]Back at Base - Some Final Reflections[/p][p]Completing the challenge by reaching the ‘summit’ of Mount Everest has left me with a real feeling of achievement and deep gratitude for the wonderful support that I have received. At the same time, my challenge does not begin to compare with the one faced by so many in need of care – whether it is age-related or as a result of dementia, mental health, or other life-affecting conditions – or by those who care for them. I am pleased that my modest effort has raised some much-needed funds for five great charities at the forefront of social care and dementia: Age UK, Community Integrated Care, Carers UK, the Care Workers’ Charity, and Alzheimer’s Research UK. A big thank you to all who have played a part in supporting their important work.[/p][p]A View from the Summit - On Top of the World[/p][p]It feels great to have finally made it to the summit! In truth, I have found it a very tough challenge but I have been spurred on every step of the way by the wonderful and generous support I have received from family, neighbours, friends, past and present work colleagues, and now a growing number of people I don't know personally who are helping me to raise funds for five great charities at the forefront of social care and dementia: Age UK, Community Integrated Care, Carers UK, The Care Workers Charity, and Alzheimer's Research UK. With your help, we have already raised well over £10,000. But, as Chris Tarrant would have said on 'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire', we don't want to stop there! In footballing and rugby terms, I have left everything out on the pitch or, in my case, up the mountain. The rest is now in your good hands. Please keep donating and continue to spread the word. Thank you.[/p][p]Day 4 Update[/p][p]2000 climbs safely completed and still going 'strong' with just one more day and the final 500 climbs to reach the summit. Thank you so much to everyone who has donated so far - your wonderful and generous support is really making my challenge seem a bit more 'easy' - or at least a little less difficult! We have already comfortably passed the initial target of raising £7,500 for my five chosen charities that do a great job in meeting care and dementia needs. Thank you! It would be fantastic to raise even more and achieve the revised target of £15,000. Please continue to donate and, as importantly, spread the word. Wouldn't it be nice to raise £25,000 - £10 for every climb, but one step at a time.....! Onwards and upwards.[/p][p]The Challenge[/p][p]On VE Day 75, as we mark the extraordinary service of an earlier generation, I plan to complete a ‘virtual’ ascent of Mount Everest by climbing a ladder up the back of my house to raise funds for five great charities.[/p][p]I will be making 2,500 climbs of a twenty foot ladder to a height of around fifteen feet – 37,500 steps up the ladder and the same number down for a total of 75,000 steps, with 500 climbs a day (for an estimated 7.5 hours a day) spread over five successive days ending on 8 May. With the angle, that will get me ‘safely’ to the summit at 29,029 feet! [/p][p]The Background[/p][p]In August 2018, a month after deciding to run the Virgin Money London Marathon for Alzheimer's Research UK, in memory of a close friend and to fulfil my ambition to run a marathon before my 65th birthday, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 bowel cancer which required a change of course. At the start of April this year, I was declared ‘cancer free’ thanks to the excellent treatment and care I have received at the Royal Free Hospital and the wonderful support of family and friends. [/p][p]The coronavirus pandemic has underlined how indebted we are to the dedication and professionalism of all those who work in the National Health Service as well as those who provide care in the community, both paid and unpaid – undervalued and often underappreciated.[/p][p]The Charities[/p][p]My Challenge focuses on those beyond the hospital door. Two of my chosen charities provide care to those in need, two support carers, and the other is committed to defeating the enemy that is dementia, thereby lessening the burden on those who endure it and those who care for them.[/p][p]The Ask[/p][p]I aim to raise £7,500 and hopefully more. Please help me reach my target by giving what you can – every little counts – and by sharing the word with others as you feel appropriate. [/p][p]In launching my challenge on the 100th birthday of Captain Tom Moore, who is an inspiration to us all, I don’t expect to follow in his illustrious footsteps although we can certainly learn from his magnificent example, and indeed his generation! It will be fantastic, with your support, to feel ‘on top of the world’ as I raise a glass to the many at 3.00pm on 8 May to celebrate VE Day 75……….[/p][p] [/p][vmgvideo class="ql-video" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/d9HgWpdfRaM?showinfo=0&rel=0&iv_load_policy=3" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true"][/vmgvideo][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p]Link to daily videos:[/p][p]https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCU0E1P8kHwxmoAHyO6jvQxQ[/p][p][br][/p]
