My story

[p]Helen and I are excited to be preparing for a physical challenge which will test our powers of endurance, resilience and coordination in new ways! We are both confident and regular runners on road and trail, but on this occasion we will be leaving the trainers at home and instead lacing up our leather boots for ‘a bit of a hike’.[/p][p]The Cotswold Way is a 103-mile trail running from Bath along the undulating west-facing escarpment of the Cotswold hills through to Chipping Campden. We are both familiar with the route having enjoyed running sections of it on many occasions over the years. This time though, we are planning to walk it in 5 days at around 20-miles per day. As keen walkers, it would not be unusual for us to do a good leg-stretcher at a weekend, but this is a different ball game![/p][p]We are taking part alongside a small team who want to support the development of young people in our area. Youth for Christ Gloucestershire are part of a national network who help them in a variety of ways and our own children and their friends are amongst the many thousands that have benefitted from their work in both church and non-church settings. The work of YFCG includes reaching out to young people through assemblies and mentoring in schools, youth groups and the community. [/p][p]We are both especially excited about their new project designed to reach out to young people aged 18-24 who are struggling to find work in order to support them in practical ways such as mentoring on CVs, job applications and interview skills and generally building their self-confidence. This is particularly close to our hearts due to its links with my professional role and Helen’s role as a trustee of the organisation. We believe that support for young people on vital subjects such as ‘how to be an employee’ and ‘how to manage my budget’ is severely lacking in society. Unfortunately, this initiative is not currently supported by government funding and therefore YFCG rely heavily on charitable donations in order to operate.[/p][p]We would love it if you feel able to support us in our challenge which will take place in late May. Many thanks in advance if you donate – no contribution is too small.[/p][p]Jon & Helen Howes[/p]
