My story

[p]In October 2021, I will be running the London Marathon to raise money for life-saving research by the Bone Cancer Research Trust. [/p][p]In 2018, my son, Adam, received treatment for Ewing's Sarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer which mainly affects children and young people. Adam had been complaining of a pain in his leg for a number of weeks, but as an active 12 year-old it was assumed to be a football injury, or growing pains. By the time the cancer was diagnosed it had already spread to his lungs.[/p][p]After many months of chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery Adam is thankfully now in remission. He continues to have scans every three months to make sure his cancer has not returned and to check that his organs have not suffered from the long-term side effects of such brutal treatment. [/p][p]Many bone cancer survivors also suffer from lifelong mobility problems as a result of their treatment. Since his diagnosis, Adam has had two major operations and will require further surgery in the next few months to enable him to walk unaided. He hopes to one day be able to ride a bike again and play football with his friends.[/p][p]Sadly every 10 minutes another child, teenager or adult is diagnosed with primary bone cancer, but a lack of funding for bone cancer research means that they face a 5-year chance of survival at little over 50%. [/p][p]Many cancers which affect children are rare, so do not receive the same amount of research funding as the cancers which mainly affect adults. Children are therefore often subjected to chemotherapy drugs which are meant for adults and which have not been improved for decades. They are often also excluded from clinical trials which means that if their first line of treatment is not effective then they have no other options available to them. [/p][p]If bone cancer patients didn't have to wait so long for a diagnosis and had kinder treatments, then not only would survival rates increase, but those who do survive would be less likely to suffer from the long-term physical and emotional effects caused by such brutal treatments. [/p][p]The Bone Cancer Research Trust is the only charity dedicated to this disease. They rely 100% on people like you supporting their work through donations, so every little bit helps. [/p][p]All of your donations will contribute to Liberty's Legacy, a special fund in memory of Liberty Schurer who sadly lost her life to Ewing's Sarcoma in 2017 at the age of 14.[/p][p]Please support me and their work today.[/p][p]Thank you! 🧡[/p]
