My story

[p]I'm taking part in the Prudential MyRideLondon FreeCycle to raise funds for Action for M.E.'s Crisis, Support & Advocacy Service, launched in direct response to Covid-19, providing urgent support for people with M.E., whose lives have been made even harder as a result of the pandemic.[/p][p]I'll be the first to admit that I'm not the strongest cyclist in the world, so my target of 15 miles may not seem far to some of you but believe me...it's enough![/p][p]As many of you will know, this is a cause that sits very close to my heart for many reasons and Action for M.E. has played a very large part in my life.[/p][p]A year after my mum, Sonya, took over as CEO of Action for M.E. my younger brother, Danny, caught a chest infection and was later diagnosed with M.E. after never recovering. Danny has always loved sport and spending time with his friends, but for a long time neither of these things were possible. He spent extended periods of time in isolation and in pain, unable to do the things that many of us took for granted whilst growing up, myself included. Thankfully, Danny's health has improved over time and whilst not fully recovered, he is able to take part in more of the things he enjoys. But for many others, this isn't the case.[/p][p]Since 2017, I have had the honour of working for Action for M.E. in various roles and have seen first-hand and been a part of the incredible work that they/we do. Action for M.E. has seen a significant increase in requests for urgent support during the pandemic, at a time when our income is predicted to drop by over 50% due to a combination of large fundraising events (RideLondon, London Marathon etc.) being cancelled and other income streams falling into decline.[/p][p]Hitting my fundraising target won't change the world, but in such unprecedented times, seemingly small actions can go a long way, so any donations that you can offer will be appreciated no end.[/p][p]Thank you.[/p][p]M.E., a disabling, neurological illness affects at least 250,000 children and adults in the UK, meaning their bodies and brains don't recover properly after activity. Many experience symptoms such as pain, brain fog, sleep problems and hypersensitivity to sound and touch. One in four people with M.E. are so severely affected they are house and/or bedbound and, for children and young people, M.E. is the most common cause of health-related long-term school absence.[/p][p]UPDATE: Myself and my Dad, Steve, completed the ride last week at a nice (needed) leisurely pace and thankfully the weather held out too! Thank you to everyone for your support in recent weeks - I've been blown away by the generosity of you all and it really does mean the world![/p]
