My story

[p]Hello family and friends, [/p][p]Thanks so much for taking the time to visit my sponsorship page. [/p][p]On Sunday 31st July, I am taking part in the Prudential RideLondon Surrey 100. A 100-mile cycle event that will see me don the lycra and ride through the capital and into Surrey’s stunning countryside. With leg-testing climbs, this route, made famous by the world’s best cyclists at the London 2012 Olympics, is no mean feat.[/p][p]Although a keen cyclist, I am no Olympian, but I do have a huge motivation for taking on this challenge and that is my eldest daughter Emily. Some of you may know that for the past 6 years, she has suffered from the disabling and misunderstood neurological condition myalgic encephalomyelitis (M.E.), sometimes diagnosed as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS, or M.E. /CFS).[/p][p]Emily’s life has been totally changed by M.E. She has gone from being an active, sociable young girl, with lots of friends, to one who no longer has the ability to cope with normal every day life. She suffers from chronic fatigue, headaches, high temperatures, pains in her joints and she is regularly violently sick. Unable to get out of bed most days due to fatigue, Emily has had to be home schooled because she has not been able to return to mainstream school and this has left her very isolated and lonely as she has lost touch with most of her friends.[/p] [p]M.E. is extremely difficult to diagnose and has only recently been accepted by the Department of Health as a genuine medical condition. Diagnosis can still pose a problem because ME/CFS symptoms are similar to those present in a number of other medical conditions. In addition, there are no examination findings which can confirm the diagnosis. Because of this, we have been incredibly helpless as parents in getting the proper medical and emotional support that Emily needs[/p] [p]Despite all that Emily is going though and the physical challenges she faces each day, with the help of tutors she has just completed her GCSE’s. We are incredibly proud of her and are desperate to help her ensure she gets the proper care and attention she needs going forward, so that she can hopefully one day lead a normal life again.[/p] [p]So, I am riding 100 miles to raise vital funds for a very special charity called Action for M.E. This charity works to end the ignorance, injustice and neglect faced by people with M.E. and provides information, support and advice to improve their health and well-being. Action for M.E. also works closely with professionals to enhance the care and support that people with M.E. receive and funds pilot research projects to advance knowledge of the illness.[/p] [p]Action for M.E is a small charity with a big job, so your support would be gratefully received so that they can continue doing the amazing work they do. Please dig deep and help make every hilly mile worth my while. [/p][p]Thanks so much[/p][p]Julian[/p]
