My story

[p]Me and my children are running the Epsom 10k Race for Life in memory of my good friend Jo Mason's nephew, Tom Stead. Tom sadly lost his battle with cancer this Christmas, his family are raising funds to help ensure this tragedy doesn't happen to more families. In an effort to help with the fund raising me, Grace, Lily and Alex are running (Lily and Alex), walking (me), crawling (Grace)across the hilly Epsom Downs for 10k. Please sponsor us if you can to show your support. [/p][p]I have attached below Tom's inspirational and moving story. [/p][p]Many thanks for all your help, [/p][p]Julie x[/p][p]Story[/p][p]Tom sadly passed away in the early hours of Boxing Day after a brave battle against osteosarcoma, (a rare form of bone cancer), aged just 19.[/p][p]Tom was diagnosed in March 2016 and spent the remainder of that year undergoing gruelling chemotherapy and a replacement knee operation. He continued with some further treatment during early 2017 but the cancer returned to the back of the same knee in May, so another operation followed by six weeks of radiotherapy. September and October were great for Tom; he returned to college and the family enjoyed a holiday in the sun. In November, Tom started feeling unwell again; the cancer had returned this time to his lungs and within two months of our holiday, Tom had passed away at home.[/p][p]Tom fought his illness so bravely and with a determination that we are all so proud of. He passed his driving test whilst feeling really unwell with chemo, he sat his first year A-Level exams in hospital, he captained the junior section of his golf club as best he could to name a few achievements during his illness. He was an inspiration to us all.[/p][p]Nobody so young should have to go through something so awful, but of course there are many families such as ours. We want to help push forward the research into bone cancer, and specifically osteosarcoma, and to also help support those who are so cruelly touched by this disease. 75% of the money raised will be donated to Bone Cancer Research Trust, and 25% to Kamrans Ward (Oxford Hospitals Charity Ward 0088) which do such a fantastic job treating and caring for children with cancer. It is our aim to raise £100,000 over the coming years in memory of Tom. Please give generously.[/p][p]The Stead Family xx[/p]
