My story

[p]Why the challenge?[/p][p]I have a number of friends and colleagues with autism or who have autistic children and/or relatives. [/p][p]As a paddlesport coach, I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to work in the outdoors with autistic children and adults. I have therefore seen first hand the significant benefits these activities can bring the participants - helping to improve their quality of life and assisting them develop their skills, explore interests, improve physical health and improve social interaction. [/p][p][/p][p]All autistic people can, and do, learn and develop with the right sort of support. [/p][p]The 100km Dragon challenge - where I along with 3 fellow keen paddlers - Lewis Stockwell, Ashley Heritage and Richard Evans, will attempt to continuously paddle 100km along the river Gt. Ouse - is one way of supporting Autism Bedfordshire and the work they do.[/p][p][/p][p]The 4 Dragon riders[/p][p][br][/p][p]What is autism? [/p][p]Autism is a lifelong condition estimated to affect at least 1 person in every 100. In the UK that means there are around 700,000 people on the autism spectrum, of which there is likely to be well over 6,000 autistic people in Bedfordshire alone. [/p][p]Although the exact cause of autism is unknown, research strongly suggests there is a genetic cause and the condition tends to run in families. Essentially it is a neurological developmental condition, although it is likely that several factors contribute. [/p][p]Put simply, the brains of people with autism are just differently wired.[/p][p]The condition is more commonly diagnosed in males than females, although recent research has indicated that females are under-diagnosed as they tend to mask their difficulties.[/p][p]Autism chiefly affects social communication and interaction, social imagination and sensory processing. Some autistic individuals may never develop any speech whilst others may speak fluently, using full sentences. [/p][p]Autism is a ‘spectrum’ condition – chiefly affecting social communication and interaction, social imagination and sensory processing. Different people are affected in different ways and to different, often fluctuating, extents. [/p][p]It is often described as a hidden disability because most autistic people are no different in appearance than anyone else yet can be severely impacted by their autism. [/p][p][br][/p][p]Why am I supporting Autism Bedfordshire?[/p][p]Autism Bedfordshire is the only voluntary organisation in the county that is specialised in supporting autistic adults and children. They are also there to support their families who become emotionally battered by the whole experience of supporting their child, fighting for the right services and trying to provide a normal home for the siblings. The need for the organisation's services has increased due to cuts in spending across the NHS and Social Services. Local Councils are being forced to make significant changes resulting in many people who are on the autistic spectrum being left without the services they need, and rely upon.[/p][p]Please have a look at their website https://www.autismbedfordshire.net[/p][p][/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p]
