My story

[span=color: #ff6600;][b]Follow my "Cross the UK" cycling Blog! at www.jmlore.co.uk/cross-the-uk[/b][/span][lt]p style="text-align: center;"[gt][span=font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;][b]"Cross the UK 2017"[/b][/span][/p] [lt]p style="margin: 0px 0px 11px;"[gt][span=font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;]In August I will be cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats and then almost immediately doing the UK Coast to Coast route, effectively navigating a “cross” over mainland UK.[/span][/p] [lt]p style="margin: 0px 0px 11px;"[gt][span=font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;]I am doing this because like many of you, Alzheimer’s disease has had a devastating effect on my family. Both my parents began to suffer the debilitating effects of dementia relatively late in their life and were diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in their eighties. Prior to that they had been physically very fit, entirely independent octogenarians with a zest for life that was an inspiration to all who knew them. Over the course of the following three short and very painful years, their mental deterioration escalated to the point when they both needed 24/7 care and the individuals we all knew and loved had all but disappeared along with the memories that they treasured.[/span][/p] [lt]p style="margin: 0px 0px 11px;"[gt][span=font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;]We are all, in effect, the sum of our memories and when these are taken from us, all that is left is the physical shell of who we once were. Memories tether us to our history and to our loved ones. Without them, we are cut adrift from life as we understand it and can no longer function as individuals. [/span][/p] [lt]p style="margin: 0px 0px 11px;"[gt][span=font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;]My mother died on 17[/span][sup][span=font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-small;]th[/span][/sup][span=font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;] October 2015 and my father on 5th March 2017. This endeavour is dedicated to them both.[/span][/p] [lt]p style="margin: 0px 0px 11px;"[gt][span=font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;]We all know that Alzheimer’s disease is affecting increasing numbers of us both directly and indirectly (as care-givers and financial supporters) as the population ages. I am convinced that research is the key to finding a cure – or better yet – preventing the onset of this horrible disease. I also believe that long life is a privilege of the 21[/span][sup][span=font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-small;]st[/span][/sup][span=font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;] century, not a curse, and is essential for our maturation as a species and to ensure that we eventually become better, more effective custodians of our planet.[/span][/p] [lt]p style="margin: 0px 0px 11px;"[gt][span=font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;]I remain equally convinced that we will get there and in the meantime, not a single penny raised in aid of this charity will go to waste.[/span][/p] [lt]p style="margin: 0px 0px 11px;"[gt][span=font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;]Here’s to our future![/span][/p] [lt]p style="margin: 0px 0px 11px;"[gt][span=font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;]Justine Longmore[/span][/p][lt]p style="margin: 0px 0px 11px;"[gt][span=font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;][lt]br /[gt][/span][/p]
