Team story

[p]This summer 12 of us were due to don our padded shorts & get on our bikes to take part in the 100 or 46 mile challenge which is the Prudential Ride-London. Our team, "Justin's Joyriders" wanted to raise much needed funds in aid of Pancreatic Cancer UK, in memory of my brother Justin, who sadly passed away 2 years ago on the 14th March 2018. [/p][p]Obviously due to Covid-19 this was unable to take place, so 2 of us are now trying to fund-raise by cycling as many miles over September. So far we have managed over 250 miles between family & work commitments & despite the odd crash![/p][p]My big bro Justin was diagnosed with Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer in August 2013, aged just 45! He had a large tumour in his pancreas, and the prognosis was not optimistic...however J was no pessimist![/p][p]He responded so well to the chemo that in September 2014 he underwent an 8 hour operation known as the Whipple Procedure, which removed his pancreas, spleen, gall bladder and a third of his liver.[/p][p]He continued on with the most amazing optimism and strength, but secondary tumours always seemed to appear round the corner. He would never admit defeat, continued to work, travel, play cricket & even attended the opening ceremony of the Rugby World Cup in 2015. [/p][p]He decided he wanted to give back to the charity that had been such a font of strength to him, and joined the Funding Board of PCUK, using his financial background and contacts to raise much needed funds and raise awareness. His involvement helped raise over £15,000! [/p][p]After 60 chemo cycles, Justin lost his fight on the 14th March 2018, a day that will be forever etched in my memory... he was a hero and an inspiration, and he is missed desperately.[/p][p]Since Justin passed, I have continued to raise money & awareness for PCUK: my children did a cake sale, my previous company hosted a Client Summer Party with auction & raffle, & we did the family Ride London in 2018. Last November - World Pancreatic Cancer month, Tower 42 turned purple in J's memory, and they have kindly agreed to repeat this for 2020 along with a pop up station in their reception to promote the charity.[/p][p]PCUK have been incredibly supportive to my family and I, along with so many other individuals and families who have to go through or support loved ones with this terrible disease. Shockingly, less than 7% of people with pancreatic cancer will survive beyond 5 years in the UK. [/p][p]Any donation however small is precious, we would all be extremely grateful if you would sponsor myself & Gary aka "Justin's Joyriders", and please think of us as we continue our challenge.[/p][p]We really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.[/p][p]Alex xx[/p][p][br][/p][p]Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this.[/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p]
