My story

[p]Cambridge COVID-19 Foodbank Appeal[/p][p]Emergency Foodbank Appeal: Due to COVID-19 virus, food charities are preparing for an “unprecedented challenge and an uncertain future” as some foodbanks say they are already low on supplies. Panic-buying in reaction to coronavirus has meant a drop in donations for some foodbanks, while some are also struggling to buy supplies from shops and supermarkets. Foodbanks have seen a significant increase in demand and many are now more dependent on our Foodbanks due to reduced or loss of income, unemployment, if they or a family member falls sick or have to self-isolate. [/p][p]At the same time as increased demand, staff and volunteers may be unavailable; due to measures put in place to slow the spread of infection will put additional pressure on foodbanks already dealing with a record level of need for emergency food.[/p][p]Our Goal: As uncertainty continues over the impact of the situation our focus is to raise money now to give essential funds to the Cambridge City Foodbank that will provide emergency food and gas/electricity top ups for those who cannot afford to eat or heat their homes.[/p][p]Why donate to Cambridge City Foodbank?[/p][p]• Big or small, every gift you give helps transform lives.[/p][p]• Foodbanks need our help and they cannot do this without your support.[/p][p]• They are here to help people in crisis now and in the future.[/p][p]• Foodbanks need funds to keep going. They appreciate whatever you can give, big or small.[/p][p]• Foodbanks need funds to purchase certain items that are less popular for donation.[/p][p]• Every donation goes to the charity directly.[/p][p]The Team[/p][p]Three local residents have launched an online appeal to raise funds for the Cambridge City Foodbank following the COVID-19 outbreak. Cambridge residents Dr Kal Karim (an academic), Shahida Rahman (published author and a Trustee of Cambridge Central Mosque) and Ibrahim Rahman (a social media professional) set up this fundraising campaign on Sunday 15th March 2020. We hope the donations from our fellow residents will continue so we can support our foodbanks. Wellness and wellbeing is at the heart of this appeal, and I hope we will be able to alleviate some of the serious hardships that the community face now and in the coming months. It has been an incredible effort from all involved so far and great to see so many people donating and raising awareness of this appeal through various social media channels. Keep up the good work and keep donating! [/p][p]A message from Jon Edney, Director/Coordinator, Cambridge City Foodbank[/p][p] “We are determined to keep the foodbank running and expect a big increase in need as people face lay-offs and reduced hours. As we are now making plans how to cope, and even expand the foodbank, we have been amazed by the explosion of support coming from the public. We have received so many messages and offers of support and it shows that, even in this difficult period, there are those who want to give their time and resources to help. An example is this extraordinary fundraiser which has clearly caught the mood. I salute those who put the fundraiser together and all those that have given to it. This is true community spirit.”[/p][p]Update[/p][p]We had initially targeted £2,000 in mid March but we exceeded that in two days and were overwhelmed by the generosity of the public. After 2 week we hit the £10,000 target with Gift Aid. It is May now and we are still going strong at over £15,000! We hope to reach £20,000.[/p][p]A video on the appeal can be found at: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2Nj9IBB-MhA[/p]
