My story

[p]Update[/p][p]Covid-19 has changed all of our lives over recent months, including those of us who were planning to run London this year. We trained through the storms of early 2020, battling high winds and torrential rains and were in the final stages of high mileage when lockdown was announced. Our marathon plans changed - the mass event was cancelled and we are running a virtual London marathon. [/p][p]For the first time ever we have the chance to run the London marathon wherever we are in the world! Dave and I will be running ours in Cornwall together with friends and running clubmates who have also signed up to cover the distance locally. This is such a fantastic event and a chance to be part of something epic - the 40th race is ours!![/p][p]My story[/p][p]At least once in each of our lives we have thought about doing something completely 'out there' and for me it has been running the London marathon! I'm not a natural runner, my body type is closer to moose than gazelle but when I decide to do something I give it my absolute all. I love a challenge and I can't think of a bigger personal challenge than running a marathon in the greatest city in the world![/p][p]So why am I running for Mencap? Well first of all, I work for Mencap and am therefore able to see the incredible work that is done each day supporting people with learning disabilities to live their best possible lives. I am also privvy to the incredible amount of campaigning that we do on behalf of people with a learning disability - including voting, health and relationships. I also have a deeply personal reason for doing this, my 5 year-old grandson James has a learning disability and is non-verbal. The work that Mencap does will benefit him and our family and so I can't think of a better way to show him how much I love him than by pushing myself to my limits.[/p][p]Right now, people with a learning disability face inequalities in every area of life with almost 1 in 3 young people with a learning disability spending less than 1 hour outside their home on a typical Saturday. [/p][p]They face barriers finding a job, accessing activities in their local community and receiving good quality healthcare. We tackle these issues head on by providing support in a way that meets individual needs and encourages greater independence. [/p][p]We give expert advice and information that empowers people and their families. And we campaign relentlessly for changes that brings greater equality for people with a learning disability.[/p][p]By supporting Team Mencap you will be helping us to support people with a learning disability to live the life they choose, and do the things they love.[/p][p]Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to Mencap. [/p][p]Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. [/p][p]I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.[/p]
