My story

[p]As a child my Dad suffered from rheumatic fever which damaged his heart and he was told that he probably would not live past the age of forty. Ever a believer of 'it's not over until its over' he went on to live a full and successful life as an internationally regarded poet and philosopher, as well as being a much loved husband, dad, granddad, great granddad and friend to many. [/p][p]In the last few months of his life he knew the end was approaching however, instead of feeling sorry for himself, he just wanted everyone to know how grateful he had been for the wonderful care and support he had been given by the Heart Team at Torbay Hospital across the years and wanted any collection from his funeral and subsequent wake to be given to the hospital in recognition of this.[/p][p]Sadly on February 4th 2020, at the age of 80, my Dad's heart finally gave up and as a result of Covid-19 there has been no further opportunity to gather, in the numbers who would wish to be there, to pay tribute to him, his life and his work.[/p][p]Therefore, on Saturday 10th October I will be following the SW Coastal path, one of his favourite places to walk, from Hope's Nose to Berryhead and back again, a distance of approximately 32 miles (starting and finishing at Goodrington beach). I will be doing this not only in memory of my Dad but also as a personal tribute from myself, my sister and my mum, to the wonder staff who cared for him on his last day. From the ambulance teams who attended our call, the A&E team who initially treated him and the palliative care team and nurses who found him a bed to allow his last moments to pass with the dignity he deserved.[/p][p]Any donation, no matter how small will be very much appreciated, thank you xx[/p]
