My story

[p]I’ve run 400 miles in my training for Brighton Marathon so far and it’s been tough, really tough. The challenge of training for a marathon is as mental as it is physical, but running has also given me important time to reflect and de-stress, just as culture does. [/p][p]So I will be fundraising for charities that work in the arts and in mental health – two areas that have suffered dramatic government funding cuts over the past decade:[/p][p]• Artsadmin, the arts organisation I work for. They give free advice to 500 artists a year, take cultural projects into schools and prisons, and use the arts to inspire positive action around climate change, migration, disability, social issues and so much more. [/p][p]• Samaritans, a charity that always listens and gives people a safe place to talk about whatever is getting to them. Their 20,000 volunteers respond to more than 5 million phone calls, letters, texts and emails a year.[/p][p]With me running and you donating, together we can raise £1,000 (or hopefully more!) for these excellent causes, so please: [/p][p]— Donate your spare change[/p][p](all donations to Artsadmin are doubled by Arts Council England until August 2019 so there’s no better time to give generously!)[/p][p]—Gift Aid your donation if you can so it is worth 25% more[/p][p]—Come and support me in Brighton on Sunday 14 April[/p][p]—Feed me cakes, pasta, bananas and anything calorific if you see me between now and the start line! [/p][p]With special thanks to three people who are no longer with us but have inspired me to run and fundraise for these causes: [/p][p]—Ashley, whose incredible determination I’ll be channelling and in memory of our Brighton swims;[/p][p]—John, a family friend and an amazing advocate for the Samaritans for many decades;[/p][p]—My dad, who showed me how to love culture and sport in equal measure. [/p]
