My story

[p]Every year we use World Down Syndrome Day as an opportunity to increase awareness and understanding about Down Syndrome. We get involved in various campaigns, we 'Rock our Socks' and we do our best to help others understand the truth about living with, and loving someone, with Down syndrome. [/p][p]The ongoing restrictions mean this year we can't all be together, but that isn't going to stop us doing our best to help the world understand in a more accurate way what down syndrome is and how you can help even in small ways. [/p][p]As many of you know, Tom was born with Down Syndrome. Tom has so many strengths, he is a fantastic climber, thrower and general mess maker! He is so funny, determined and stubborn too. Tom is kind and loving, gives the absolute best kisses and cuddles and people sre just drawn to him wherever we go. Tom does need some extra help with things - his muscle tone is lower so physical things like sitting up, walking & eating all take extra effort. Toms auditory memory is pretty rubbish and he needs things shown to him in a visual way before his brain can make real sense of things and store it properly; and because he has difficulty with low tone and coordination, Tom has difficulty with speech development. Despite these extra difficulties, when Tom is shown information in the right way and with extra time and care, he learns really really well. In fact, Tom remembers makaton signs better than I do! [/p][p]So this World Down Syndrome Day 2021, we're hoping to raise money for one of the charities who provide this extra support to Tom, who help us to help him, and who have shown us the most kindness, love and compassion since we started on this journey 2 years ago. [/p][p]In order to raise funds:[/p][p]* Tom is going to walk 1/2 mile every day for 21 days, from March 1st - 21st March 2021. With support from us and his siblings, Tom is going to show the world 'he absolutely can' and is going to stomp up the hill between his home and his nan's *[/p][p][br][/p]
