My story
[p]In November 2018 my daughter Lita, then aged 3 was diagnosed with Juvenile Arthritis. In February 2019 she started on her first regular weekly injections of the drug Methotrexate and in August 2019 after a severe flare-up in her neck she was started on an additional drug called Amgevita, also an injection. Lita finds these injections very hard to cope with, especially the Amgevita which she finds especially painful. Thanks to these drugs and others she has been flare free for almost a year.[/p][p][br][/p][p]I wanted to try and raise some money to help with research into this debilitating disease and therefore decided that I would try to fulfil something that I've been wanting to do for years - head to the Isle of Vementry for a few days, camping by myself, minimal supplies, no internet or music and hope that I could get some sponsorship for the challenge.[/p][p][br][/p][p]I plan to donate 50% of funds raised to Juvenile Arthritis Research (JAR). The other 50% will go to Macmillan Cancer Support who have supported my niece Lauren since her diagnosis of bowel cancer almost a year ago, all the way through to her major surgery last week. Lauren says, “they go above and beyond, working all hours of the day, on the end of a phone whenever you need them for patients and families, so they are never 100% off shift, pretty much working 24/7”. Money raised will be used to support people living with cancer in the Shetland area[/p][p][br][/p][p]I hope to be dropped off on Vementry for 4 full days and nights at some point between the 23rd of July and the 6th of August.[/p][p]I plan to take about 300g of porridge oats as my only foodstuff which should be enough for a basic breakfast each day. I will forage and fish for the rest and collect/purify water from the loch.[/p][p]I will also be taking basic camping supplies including a fishing rod, knife, head torch, lighter, cooking utensils, 1 book and a Go-Pro camera and accessories to document the adventure. [/p][p]All going to plan I hope to get a friend to collect a memory card mid-way through the challenge so that photos can be uploaded to show how things are going.[/p][p]Apart from collecting firewood, fishing and foraging for food, I plan to pass the time redding-up some of the beaches. I will be taking a pile of bags out for what I collect which will then be piled up and collected soon after the trip is over and disposed of.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Thank you in advance for any donation you are able to make, no matter how small. It is really appreciated and will make a difference to the work of the charities.[/p][p] [/p]
