Team story

[p]In June this year, our lovely dad, husband and friend Paul Jameson was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). We are aiming to raise £50,000 for the MND Association charity by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and attempting to complete the first game of tennis ever to be played at the summit![/p] [p]For those that aren’t aware, MND is a disease that adversely affects motor neurones. Motor neurones connect and send messages from the brain to muscles in the body, which are responsible for controlling and initiating movement. In MND the messages stop getting through, and when this happens the muscles can’t move properly. If muscles aren’t used, they become weak and get smaller. This is known as wasting. This means that the person with MND finds it harder to do the things they used to do. It can affect how they walk, talk, move, eat, drink and breathe. As these symptoms get worse, other people have to provide support.[/p] [p]Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for MND. People with the disease do not get better and, in time, will die from MND. It is a progressive disease which means symptoms get worse over time. However, scientists are constantly discovering new things about MND and the way it works, which will hopefully lead to better treatments and potential cures. A large proportion of the money the MND Association received will enable such vital research to take place.[/p] [p]In October this year, Paul and a team of close friends and family succeeded in climbing to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, which lies at 5,895m above sea level. The challenge was completed when a game of tennis was played at the summit. This has become the highest altitude tennis game ever - a world record.[/p][p]We would massively appreciate any donations, however small, towards the MND Association. As a charity, they provide excellent support and advice to current sufferers of MND and to their families, which is incredibly important and valuable. They also conduct research into MND to constantly look for new treatments and potential cures.[/p] [p]As part of our Klimanjaro climb fundraising, we're also going to donate a small part of the funds raised to local African charities. These funds will be distributed during our visit to the region.[/p] [p]Best wishes,[/p] [p]The Mount Kilimanjaro Tennis Masters 2017 team[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. We really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.[/p]
