My story

[p]We made it.... [img][/img][/p][p]The weather last week was not ideal for Channel swimming but we finally got the go ahead for our swim on Saturday morning so grabbed our bags and drove to Dover. We met our pilot at Dover Marina at midnight and at 1.20am Sunday morning our first swimmer left Samphire beach. The swim was tough, especially during the dark of the night. We had quite choppy seas - wind against tide - which meant at times it felt like being in a washing machine!!. We watched a beautiful sunrise and really appreciated the warmth of the sun and views across the channel. Our boat pilot safely navigated us out of English waters across 2 shipping lanes and into French waters. The French coast got closer and closer but, due to the strong tides along the coast, we had to take a loop south before crossing the current and swimming onto Wissant beach. We landed at 3.17pm, just under 14 hours of swimming. It was an amazing adventure nd I was lucky to be part of a great team. [/p][p]Finally, I am ready to take on my biggest challenge yet - to swim the English Channel.[/p][p]I am a member of a 4-person relay team called the Dorset Dolphins aiming to swim across the English Channel, our training started last summer when we shed our wetsuits to swim in the sea off Bournemouth. I continued to sea swim throughout the winter to acclimatise to the cold water. [/p][p]Our attempt will come sometime during the first week in September depending on tide and weather. We start from Dover and swim one hour each in rotation until we reach the French coast. The shortest distance across the English Channel is 21 miles, however due to the currents the route is usually S-shaped and the swim is likely to be considerably further. [/p][p]We will be escorted by Stuart Gleeson on Sea Leopard and our progress can be tracked via https://www.channelswimmingassociation.com/tracking[/p][p]Having visited Nepal many times and enjoyed the stunning scenery and the generosity of the Nepalese people I am looking for sponsorship to support the Nepal based charity Kidasha. It is a children’s charity that works to improve the lives of children living in extreme poverty in one of the poorest countries in the world. During my last visit to Nepal on October 2019 we visited a street shelter in Pokhara for homeless kids funded by Kidasha. We had the opportunity to speak to the dedicated staff and enjoy the company of the children. More information is available on their website https://kidasha.org/ or follow them on Facebook https://m.facebook.com/KidashaNepal/[/p][p]The English Channel is called the Mount Everest of swimming so it seems fitting to raise money for a charity supporting the poorest in Nepal, the home of Everest.[/p]
